ATTAK Z
Top gear is so informed that they don't even use units...... It has 500 torques..... As an Engineer this drives me nuts. Yeah its retarded, especially when considering torque is measured in so many ways on a car, normally newton meters or lb/ft but you even see it in kg/m and all sorts these days. The other one that annoys me is when journos or yanks describe torque in 'foot pounds' what the hell is that? How many feet you can get in a pound? Got to pull you up here I'm afraid (cos I'm a pedant) newton meters newton metres lb/ft lbf ft kg/m kgf m as for 'foot pounds' ...... that's a little bit American but OK in my book and whilst we are at it dyn cm (erg) and N m are both also correct units of torque
bigbramble
Damn you are a pedant, meter (metre) was a typo but you are a 'foot pound' traitor!!

bigbramble
I suppose the VQ being a Renault engine can join the rest of the ridiculous myths associated with many Japanese sports cars. Nissan Skyline GTR's 'drive themselves' Rotary engines 'the main problem is tip wear' you can 'Chip' a skyline GTR for 1000bhp The best ones I have heard from idiots; Rotary engines rev to over 30,000 rpm, Fitting a small steering wheel to a skyline GTR increases the bhp

Infact on one such test bed using an adiabatic setup the mechanical tacho failed rpm matched that of a Turbo jet before mechanical failure of the tip seals caused the engine to reach its limit. So... bigbramble
Of course its shaft speed, after all a piston engine isn't rated in piston speed is it? A rotor spins at 1/3 crank speed which is naturally one of the reasons the crank can spin so quickly. Tips practically never 'wear' out anymore. Even 1st gen RX7's could do well in excess of 100,000 miles before the inevitable low compression would kick in. I had one on 135,000 miles - original engine. Its pre-ignition that normally kills the turbo rotaries or low oil because of numpty RX8 owners

Poor sod, you have to feel sorry for people that bought one expecting it to be just a normal car. I'm pretty sure 15mpg will quickly convince them otherwise.... There are a lot of specialists though to be fair, somewhere like RX motors in Blandford would do a full rebuild for around £2k. If you just ended up taking the car to the dealer though.... ...bad luck, its an enthusiasts car so need a bit of web forum use to work out the best places to take it.
