Island Volcano ... pain in the arse!

I do feel sorry for peeps that are

stuck abroad

and don't have any way of getting home

anytime soon or if your money is running out but feel so angry how the news once again is blowing everything out of proportion!

How come they have reporters flewn in to all these places when there is supposed to be a flight ban? Does is only effect jets ?

Now they are talking about closing schools as some teachers are abroad? FFS !! I have a name for those schools head teachers - work shy fopps!! Surely you can get supply teachers in at short notice ? Doh!

If the reported flew out before the flights were cancelled from their respective country apparently it's not causing too much disruption to Iceland apart from the immediate area as the ash is all going up then heading across to europe :(

Schools closing is a bit of a joke. I work in one and you can easily get supply teachers. It'll cost the schools a fair amount if they have a few teachers but if it's just 1 or 2 most schools now have a permanent cover teacher at the school as there's always one of the teachers off for some reason or other

Hi mate, I'm an air traffiker (military so I don't know loads about civil routes though) - I think those aircraft are probably flying over the ash cloud as they will already be at a safe (presumably) altitude as they enter UK airspace, whereas our aircraft would have to climb and descend through the affected areas, so still can't go.

I think a very few flights are now operating from Edinburgh.

I'm clearly out of work at the moment... will clean the Zed again :)

These aircraft will shortly be descending through the same ash cloud for landing in Germany. The radar shows the same coverage of the ash cloud for their destinations ;)

They are very high though

These are normal cruise heights :)

is it not true that transatlantic flights keep an higher altitude then other non transatlantic flights?

Yes but see my post above. They will be coming down soon. So will enter the supposed ash cloud :)

The transatlantic flights will stay as high as possible for as long as possible, subject to turbulence etc - saves on fuel and means they don't conflict with domestic flights and shorter cross-channel flights.

mmmm would it be true to state that its better to go through the cloud on the way down for landing... rather then going through it taking off?

Landing = the engine might not be completely shattered and could be refurb once landed

Starting = the engine goes through the ash and shuts down through flight...

Eeereh.. either way I wouldn't be flying!
