Hi,

In June last year i was given (for my Birthday) a Panasonic Lumix G1 by my parents - from then till now ive only really used it as a point and shoot camera but know that it is capable of a fair bit more than that, so i want to learn a little more about how to use it properly + some nice techniqes to be able to use to get the pictures that bit better.

My question is where do i start my info quest?!! Can anyone recommend some good novice friendly websites/ books whatever that would give me a good start?

Thanks

Jak

:p

I did mean me!!! Can belive I have 2 stressful hobbies... Car Modding and Photography!!!

How is photography stressful?? I love photography, mostly of wildlife and aeroplanes (harry potter plane spotter  ) I find it really relaxing!

Unless you shoot in Auto all the time and you know your apature / speed set ups etc etc then it can be stressful as you dont often get a 2nd chance at a shot. I must admit it has got easier with a few helpful hints and tips...

As your a plane spotter..

Some nice pics there! Rather than tie this thread up with all my favourite pics i'll make a new one soon once i've uploaded a few to photobucket for you to rip apart lol

Edit: Yeah bevis it is the Sally B parket at Duxford, but it was 'borrowed' for the film Memphis belle and has kept that piece of nose art since

Thanks Captain & 3FiddyZed - i will be sure to check those out! I think once i learn the terms and what they mean/do all will become a little clearer..........maybe lol!

Captain - so i need to configure the LCD on the camera? i take it there should be something telling me how to do this in the user manual? will have to dig this out and have a read!

oh and thanks smudge - might resort to something like that if the links cant give me what im after!

P.S. sorry if these all sound silly questions but i really am a bit of a novice at the moment!

I did my city and guilds in photography at night school and it was a brilliant way to get to know the camera and all it controls, with going to college i now have a nice little side line in photography enabling me to buy lots of toys. it was a really friendley way to meet and swap ideas with other like minded people and also most of them were 19 yr old girls which made it a lot more pleasant. I think the overall cost was about 350 quid for the course one evening a week and lots of homework over the weekend for the exams.

They dont make them like the good old B-17 B) Says Mephis Belle on the side but i actually think this is SallyB ;)

Yeh it is that. Prefered the vulcan myself, amazing noise!!

SwanageDave, yeh I been looking at the courses at the London School of Photography, gonna get signed up in the next few months.

Jak, I read something the other day about "taking a picture a day" seemed pretty good advice and something I have been trying to do!

The only problem with them if a fuse blew you had to bail out! Where on the B-17 you could still limp back to England with half the crew injured, big holes in the wing, rudder shot off, and 2 dead engines!! :)

Yeh true, amazing bit of kit. And those that flew them were pretty handy in those situations!... Could you imagine bailing out of a vulcan though... :scare:

+1 and shoot RAW if your camera supports it. Makes me laugh these days when people say shooting digital is difficult as you only get one chance, you should have tried shooting in film, then you really only got one chance! You had to wait until you developed the image before seeing what had worked or hadnt and it cost a fortune to test stuff out as developing was expensive even if you did it yourself (I did a City and Guilds in photography, so only had to pay for my paper).

Practice, practice, practice, thats what its all about. Just like heel/toe, selecting ISO, aperature and shutter speed all become second nature, so you only need one shot at a erm shot! Try taking the same shots over and over, chaging the settings and see what they do, it doesnt take long to work it all out what shutter speeds or aperatures will give you the desired effects with a good book helping you along. Get used to second guessing what settings you need and shoot RAW and you will get a decent amount of photos that come out good enough to print as RAW can save a few mistakes if you were close to the mark.

Depends on how much you know about photography.

As has previously been said, go on a course if you can. You can then discuss issues with your teacher and fellow students. Make no mistake about it, Digital Photography is quite a bit different to film photography. Understand the basics and then go on from there.
