Car wont start - UPDATE: Now Sorted :)

So car went into the dealer yesterday. They couldn't connect their computer to it, and today have said it needs a new ECU for £1700!

In no way do I think they have had time to check the wiring diagram into the ECU, and are pulling this diagnosis out of their arse because its easy.

Where do I go from here? Is there anything (hidden fuse) etc they could have missed which could be causing this? I remember once on an old Ford that it the interior light fuse went it would also disable the ECU! Can it be something similar on the 350z?

Thanks Andy

Get the car towed to a specialist with ECU's and get a second opinion. If your feeling is right this sounds like a typical dealer rabbit out of a hat solution when they don't have a clue (Sadly not just a Nissan dealer trait). You can't hurt anything by doing this, it's out of warranty I guess. As stated above if the ECU is fried then save half your money and get a tuned remap 1 and smile and give the finger as you scream past the dealers showroom window when its fixed. :thumbs:

This happened to me on a previous car... exactly the same symptoms, nothing could get into the car to diagnose it.. turned out to be a secondary power supply to the ECU, best thing to do is get an Auto electrician out, Might be something as simple as a broken wire, mine was!!

Get someone who comes highly recommended who can replace bits of the loom, dedicated to automotive electronics specialist etc, i.e. not a 'tuning shop' or an audio place.

As for the suggestion of an uprev retune ermmmmm :ban:

Most "Tuning Shops" will have a electrical/electronics wizard.I know we have at Abbey Motorsport.

Whats the problem with an Uprev remap anyway.

Surley if you can't connect to the ECU then it is impossible to reflash it??

Obviously you wouldnt tune it until you have fixed the problem.........

Tony

So the suggestion of just reflashing it to cure the problem is wrong, which is what Dan was getting at :)

If you read the thread properly you will see that I did not suggest a reflash. There was a suggestion that there was a problem with Uprev and I would just like to know what that problem was.

Whats the problem with that?

uprev chip from abbey perhaps?

wasn't nurrish selling an ECU which was already tuned by RStuning or something. for about £400, so all you'd need to do is get it programmed to your car.

the retune by RS would set you back about £380-£450 so think of it as buying a retune that fixes your car. :lol:

These were offered as solutions to the problem no? infact I'll highlight seeing as you appear unable to read :)

Nobody was saying there was an issue with a reflash, so I suggest that you read the thread again.

Can I put my 2 pences worth into this thread;

tonysoprano is my father my partner in Abbey Motorsport , we are not just a tuning shop thou , we can do everything on a 350 Z not just tune them, We are the only non Nissan dealer in the UK to have a Nissan Consult 2 with the supporting cards for security set up and we have a Nissan trained technician that has done his time on 350z,s.

We have had a few 350,s with non start issues and can say Alan,s problem sounds different to what we have seen before. Mostly the cars we have seen that wont start just need the NATS code resetting or by resetting the ECU.

Just a few pointers;

1, key needs to be coded to the NATS box. So you should be able to swap and ECU between cars

without recoding keys/nats box

2, the ECU has 4 12volt feeds;

Pin 109 is 12 volt feed from ignition switch. (non permanent)

Pin 119/120 are feed from the ECM relay. Pin 120 goes to the ECU and Pin 119 feeds the main

engine sensors (Air flow meter Crank/cam sensors) (non permanent)

Pin No 121 is permanent 12 volt feed.

I would say if the dealer cant comunicate with the ECU either Pin 109 or Pin121 arent getting 12v correctly.

Also the fans running at half speed say there is a problem that will not allow the car to run. this is Nissans way of saying there is a major problem.

If you cant communicate with the ECU a reflash wont work either as we program through the ODB2 connection.

Shame Andy is so far away from us as I am sure we could help you out, but Andy feel free to give us a ring to discuss anything or we can answer your questions on here to help people out in the future.

hope this helps thou.

Mark
