Rosssco
Fairly random post (and maybe in the wrong section) but it is roughly Zed related - I'm looking at the VQ35DE as a possible candidate for installation into another car (I won't say what, although installaton would be transverse, and not front-wheel drive ). Prices for these engines seems to have dropped easily into the sub £2k mark, as Zed's are unfortuately stacked and written off, therefore they 'look' to be good value for what you get. Therefore I'm compiling a list of what I could potentially need from a broken Z. What springs to mind: Complete engine and ancillaries, including all intake and exhaust manifolds (A/C and power steering pump not required) ECU, engine loom etc. Fly-by-wire throttle pedal Engine immobiliser system / transponder key?? Anything else specific to the Zed that is required to properly operate this engine (I mean those little things that's likely to be missed).. Its all just speculation at this stage, but can't think of a better place to ask! Also, any pics of a built up engine and dimensions would be just about perfect.. Thanks, Ross
Stew
ZMANALEX is the most technical VQ person I know (including Nissan....) and I bet you he could supply everything you need too!
3FIDDYZ
Speak to Zmanalex... hes got most of the bits that you will need if not all... Whats it going into?
Rosssco
I was down at Alex's place recently, and did notice he had a few of these engine 'in stock'... I would imagine its not the engine that the hard to find bit though, it's all the little bits and pieces that allow an engine to work with out the need to spend £1000's on standalone engine management and custom / specialist work to get the thing running correctly. I guess that's where research comes in- stock power / torque would be sufficient in a car 300kgs lighter than the Zed... The car would be a Toyota (Hey, at least its still Japanese..?!?!) nrenz123
Personally i'd go for a lighter turbo lump
Rosssco
AE86? Transverse Layout Plus, I wish..! Personally i'd go for a lighter turbo lump Yeah, but for instant grunt, response and just generally sounding good (plus a bit of willy waving at the fact that 3.5 liters in the back is fairly uncommon), a V6 can't be bettered... Plus this car already comes with a turbo lump, so where's the fun in that!
yokomo
mr2 then ! take a look on my350z.com , theres a couple on there that have dont VQ35 swaps im sure thye know whats needed.
IanS16
Apparently you dont need anything but the ECU...
Rosssco
MMM, very interesting indeed! So just ship the ECU / harness off to these guys, they tweak it to remove the various security features and restriction, and Houston we have lift off... No more worries about locating an engine with all the various additional electronics, keys etc. Also, I remember Alex gave me a quick peek at his roadster, and he had a traditional throttle cable and rocker in use rather than the fly-by-wire throttle pedal. I wonder if this is where he located this particular mod. Thanks for the info Ian
ZMANALEX
I know of a Zed in the Tayside area which is running without "security" It kept dropping the NATS code and the only way to get the car to start and run was to do a NATS removal or bypass, so no further issues with BCM, IPDM and Ignition Key. As far as I am aware, it is still running troublefree.
Rosssco
Ah, so how easy is it to remove these security features..? Is this a physical removal, or purely ECU based? I dropped those guys in the States an email to ask if they provide the security removal as a service... Thanks for the replys
