law350
hey people. been toying with changing the zed but everythgin i look at in my price range doesnt put that 'zed' smile on my face so probably gonna do a few mods to the old girl. 54 plate on 30k with jwt. only real 'engine' mod. my local performance garage has suggested a full mongoose de-cat system and then to have it re-mapped which should give good gains. any ideas how much? they reckon all this to cost about £1500. bit of performance and sounds nicer too. any one else have better ideas? thanks for the advice. Carbon Coops
That sounds about right you should join me and get an aero turbine exhaust, v rare and the best i have heard coops
law350
what they look like and how much for them then? what sort of power gain should you expect form a de cat exhaust and remap then?
Gaz Walker
Hiya :bye: Who's your local performance garage out of interest? AFAIK there's isn't many places that can re-map the stock ECU so will be interesting to know if they are claiming to offer this service There's not many owners with the mongoose so I'd maybe look at other options there but certainly and exhaust, Y-Pipe and de-cat/sport-cats are a good way to gain power. I'd also recommend a Motordyne Plenum Spacer to increase power.
law350
hey, my local dealer is gt-art in lewes. and have heard it second hand that they did a re-map. i'll call them in a bit and check as he was busy when i phoned last. i am not too worried about the exhaust brand as long as it looks and sounds nice and is of similar price then thats fine by me. what gains are offered by goign this route? 3FIDDYZ
Gary dosnt carry out remaps, but he does do piggybacks and tuning He did mine (If you speak to him, tell him Mark says Hi and I will see him next week!) Am sure he can get the mongoose in, but as an alternative there is a lovely 5zigen one at Envy! Do you know what your power is at the moment? If not, get that on the dyno first so then you can get an idea of gains! Dont think anyone can really give you an idea untill you have had it dynoed.. Did he suggest doing manifolds, decats and then full mongoose zorst? What about the plenum?
law350
yeha just spoke to him before i saw your reply. how have you found your mod gains in relation to how it drove before. He didnt, he is digging out from the computer the results form one he did last week (might be yours) and then gonna call me back with what i can roughly expect. just out of curiosity, do you use just gti's in horsham?? are new manifolds worth carrying out. the system i would get would be a de-cat however. mongoose for about £900 so i have been told. thanks matey
3FIDDYZ
Nope, have only used Gary for any tunning / fitting... Used to live around Horsham.. I did go see the guys at SPC and they wernt really interested so they got crossed off my list very quickly! Yeh am happy with my gains from the work he has done and they have held up too... Its also dynoed higher than his results on an independent dyno so I am very happy with the work. Just over 290bhp... Maniflods are if there under the car and doing other stuff, but its not a cheap mod to buy or fit... you do need to check the bore sizes are the same all the way through though... Getting it right from engine to zorst tip is a good thing! Only thing with decats is MOT time, you will need to stick the old ones in, perhaps consider highflows. Again Envy have them if Gary cant get quick enough...
Gaz Walker
Personally I'd recommend a Motordyne Plenum Spacer, K2 Exhaust, Y-Pipe and Berk Hi Flow Cats, these come to around £1233 in parts. See how you get on with those mods and then consider a re-map or piggyback after that

Chris`I
Definately do a plenum spacer even if you arent planning the remap. I'd do the others if you are planning to remap down the line, otherwise they are just very expensive for not a lot of gain. As for performance from the remap, its hard to say, some cars are strong, some arent, so somewhere between 15-20BHP is achievable, but the big gain is mid range torque. law350
thanks for the help guys, really appreciated. definately will doe the spacer. seen them for about £220 ish. whats the fitting like for them cost wise. then will go exhaust and remap once got this completed. thanks again

I swapped my plenum which meant I had to take the throttle body off and fitted the spacer at the same time. Only took about 1.5 hours and I am in no way an expert with cars. The plenum is only some bolts and hoses that need unhooking. You have a couple of different size bolts but it really is quite simple. Just have to be careful when putting the plenum back on as you need to make sure you don't overtighten the bolts.

3FIDDYZ
Midrange torque, slight change of engine note. Worthwhile IMO esp if your looking at tuning... Yes it does come with instructions and pictures...

3FIDDYZ
Even though Gary is a great guy... The tea and bacon sarnies you get at envy if your there for a short while are worth the trip. MattG
If you want a noticable increase in performance for reasonable money (i.e. not forced induction) this is my long term plan: 4.08 Final Drive kit from Adam at Z1 auto: http://www.z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?mode ... rodid=2833 This will give you 15% more at the wheels and will be a very noticable increase in acceleration, probably more than any other mod on an N/A car. Revs won't get silly high when cruising either, about 3650rpm @ 90mph in 6th. Get ZMANALEX to fit it for you or a local transmission specialist. Expect it to cost about £1000 supplied and fitted I would say. The £ is getting stronger against the $ now so this mod is getting cheaper all the time. Motordyne 5/16" ISO Thermal Plenum Spacer: http://www.z-store.co.uk/index.cfm?fuse ... rentCat=28 A proven performance mod for £220 and most people can fit this themselves. Uprev stock ECU remap at RSTuning (oop north) or Abbey Motorsport (down south): Circa £500. Along with the plenum spacer this should get an early car knocking on the door of 300bhp and 270 torques. Not that the numbers really matter. The main thing is that combined with the gearset and plenum spacer you should have a pretty savagely accelerating car! You could always get an exhaust and induction kit too but I wouldn't expect much in the way of gains for them, it's more a noise thing. I'd just go for a Cosworth or K&N drop in filter and maybe replace the stock exhaust with a Nismo when it fails.
IanS16
4.08 Final Drive kit from Adam at Z1 auto: I was advised not to go with this kit unless you have a raised rev limit or a 313ps model as you actually lose time changing gear more often. Do a search for 'final drive' and all the info is in there

I think the losing time thing is more in terms of quarter miles times though due to the extra gear change, which I'm not really bothered about. The increased in gear acceleration should make real world driving much more fun though!

I read one guy saying he had been running his car like that for 3 years without problems. I guess Adam at Z1 might be a good one to ask.
