Stew
Is it engine oil or could it perhaps be power steering fluid?

Stew
Worth checking Not sure the exact routing of the power steering plumbing but it must run fairly close to the oil filter.
ZMANALEX
There are not a lot of oil pipes immediately above the oil filter. There are two breather pipes coming off the oil filter sandwich plate and that is about it. The PAS pump is further up, above the alternator but that does not mean to say that PAS fluid would not find its way down to the filter area. If your car is a JDM with auto gearbox then there are two oil pipes that run along the area just above the oil filter.
