Which Touchscreen?

Hi All,

Could anyone suggest which model Lilliput touchscreen is the best to replace the oem one in the cubby hole for carputer purposes?

Suggestions of which one has the best spec and best fit without any trimming etc. would be very much appreciated.

Alternatively does anyone know if this screen is a good fit? http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=10773

Best. Ashley

Not been in the 'scene' for a while so dont know which exact models fit, but as a rule of thumb any lilliput 7" screen will fit with minimal trimming. I had to take mine out of its casing to get it to flush fit into the cubby, but it looks OEM now it is in there. If you can afford it, get a transfective display as it stops glare on sunny days.

Hi,

Thank you for the speedy replies, the tip and the welcome.

A couple more questions if you have the time to answer.

Does your lilliput screen turn itself on when power is applied? Or do you have to access its buttons somehow?

Also, if you have a reverse camera fitted does the lilliput automatically switch to that input when you put your car into reverse?

I ask these questions as the alternative touchscreen I put the link to above does have these options.

Thanks in advance.

Ashley

Again, this might not be the same with the newer ones, but on mine, you need to access the hiden menu and the options for your 2 questions are there. By default they are not set, but you can set it to turn on and off with the application of power (rather than by the switch) and also auto switch to RCA (for camera) when a signal is applied to that to and then back to the previous input when it is turned off. Powering the camera can be done from the reverse light feed.

Plenty chap, but far too much to write down, but feel free to ask any questions and we'll do our best to answer them. The Zed is actually a fantastic car to have a CarPC in, its very easy to intall, with near zero fabrication required and very easy access to all the bits and bobs you need to hook up. If you havent done a CarPC before, one think I defiantely recommend budgeting for is a proper CarPC PSU. Has a lot of useful functions and saves the PC from powerspikes on IGN. I have a Carnetix 2140 and its excellent

I'm actually looking to instal a Mac mini. That way I can have the best of both worlds by being able to run Windows or the native Leopard OS. I was thinking of using Centrafuse as the front end software under Windows XP. It certainly looks very good.

Being an iPhone user it would be very handy to have a Mac in the car as well as at home and there are some good apps that will allow you to use the iPhone as a remote mouse and keyboard.

So far in my research it looks like the Carnetix P1900 is the best PSU for this, unless you know better? Also do you know the best position in the car to locate the PSU?

Im also going to need some advise on which GPS receiver and Digital TV antenna are the best to use?

Thanks in advance. Ashley.

Ok, so you will be ending up with a setup very similar to myself, in that I run a MacMini, but on Windows natively and Centrafuse as my front end. P1900 will be likely more than enough, the one I got was overkill, I think they offer very similar features these days. Best place to locate it is behind the passenger seat in the cubby. There is a fake floor which you can put it under. You can also run the power cables down the passenger sill from the battery via a large grommit which is by the battery (told you it was simple!). I have my Mac itself located in the passenger side "Letterbox" cubby between the rear speakers.

For GPS I recommend the Globalsat BU353 USB. Can be had from Linitx along with the screen and PSU. This can be routed out the back of the cubby and under the rear strut pastic to give good reception and also hidden from sight. Dont bother with the Centrafuse nav edition, its pants (until V3 comes out anyway). Loads of us are using iGo 8 for PC which I can set you up with if you like (when you are ready for it).

That should get you going :)

That is all really useful information. Thank you, I really appreciate it and will definately take you up on the software offer.

Couple of other things...

Can the I go 8 software be run from within centrafuse or do you have to quit centrafuse to use it?

Also, I can't find any lilliput screens on linitx. Do you know if they supply them or are their own brand screens any good?

And finally, you never mentioned about a digital Tv receiver in your reply. Do you have any experience of these?

Your time taken to answer these questions is very much appreciated. You are very helpful.

Best. Ashley.

iGo can be "embedded" in such that it gets run in a window inside CF so looks as if its native. We have a skin for it that fits perfectly for 7" touchscreens. I think Linitx only do their own screens, but from what I've heard they are the same ones loads of people sell (mp3car.com etc) so I think they will be decent enough. At least with the Linitx one you can contact them and ask about turning on with power and reverse camera ;)

Sorry dont know anything about digital tv in the car, so cant help there. Someone else on the forum fit some kind of TV in their car recently, try a quick search and you might turn it up. They had the antenna stuck in the rear 3/4 window.

I'd really like a copy of that software and the skin. Is there any chance you could upload it to my mobile me account?

The linitx screen does automatically switch on when there is a signal present on the VGA and also automatic switching for the reverse camera when a +12v feed is detected on one of its input cables so that would be very handy. It switches from VGA to the RCA input for this so I was wondering if you knew if the oem camera has an RCA connector or not?

Thought of a couple of other things....

What is the best route for the VGA and USB cable to the screen?

Can you get a 'thin' VGA cable or do you have to go with a thick chunky one intended for a PC monitor?

Many thanks again.

Straight through the centre console?

There are 5 screws holding in the central arm rest bit (with the handbrake etc). Do a search on google, theres plenty of guides, but its really easy to do. Can route the VGA, USB and power for the touchscreen via that route. I also have my RCA cables to my headunit going down there too so loads of room. No need for slimline cables.

Hi Again,

As part of the same subject I was just wondering which head unit you are using or which one you would recommend?

Also, I've got all the bits now so any navigation software you'd like to donate would be very much appreciated.
