Guys,

Have any of you had any experience buying reasonably big things from the states and getting them sent to the UK? I'm looking to find the cheapest/best courier company to do this so that I can buy a custom subwoofer enclosure off eBay US.

Any help, advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks, Mark.

I know it does not answer your question, but I would try and sort something from the UK.By the time you have added shipping costs and import tax you would be looking at double that price.

I am sure a decent car audio specialist can make one of those and cheaper, just my opinion.

Trouble is, from what I can see, there's no sub enclosure like that available in the UK. I need one that fits under the strut bar so I can still fit golf clubs and trolley in the boot! (I do not want to use the stock location directly behind the seat).

I'm sure that creating a custom enclosure for that location from scratch will be 4+ hours work and @ around £50 an hour at the specialist ICE installer I use that'll mean £200 minimum, probably more.

I'll get quotes for the DHL and Fedex options 'martinmac' suggested.

Thanks guys!

Mark.

Just another point Mark.

In my experience with car hifi, sub enclosures are tailored to a specific speaker so you get the correct mass of air for it to work correctly. Is this just a general enclosure,if so you might be wasting your money as the sub you put in it wont operate as it should.

a sub box like the one in the link can be made for around £30, i know coz i made one :)

a sheet of 12mm mdf £8 local diy shop

spray glue £5 (ebay)

sub box carpet around £10

speaker connections, like in the link, £5ish

a few screws n wood glue.

plus a round 2 hours to make it, think i did rush some of it as the shape could have a better fit but does it's job.

built it around 2 years ago but never got around to having the rest of my ICE re-fitted from my last car

I got one of those a few weeks back and it's a great little box with a perfect fit. Just make sure you buy a sub that is designed for around 0.8 cuft of air and you'll be fine.

USPS (United States Postal Service) will most likely be the cheapest to get it sent over, they are the US equivalent of Royal Mail and they hand it over to Parcel Force when it lands in the UK. To get it sent by USPS will be around $100 on top of the price of the box and when you factor in duties and VAT you'll be looking at around £150 for the box delivered to your door (+ or - £10 or so depending on the exchange rate). Mine came to about £160 all in but the interest rate is a bit better for Brits at the moment.

So not the cheapest but when you consider that Nissan want £80 for the vertical tonneau it begins to look a lot better!

EDIT: Forgot to add, if you order from that company you probably won't get much of a choice of how it's sent. They'll just send you an invoice with an extra $100 added to it for USPS shipping. That's what they did with me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update!

Receive the enclosure today from 'zenclosures' on eBay US and after a £25.20 customs charge the total cost (delivered) was £144...a bargain for such a great custom fitment.

Will be getting the rest of the install done in a week so will post photos after :)

Mark.
