jim
Can anybody help? I am trying to remove the plenum and can't get the bolts that hold the throttle body undone? Is there anything better/stronger than an Allen key for these bolts? Do you recommend WD40 or similar first? Cheers for any help offered. H5
They are tough at first, have you tried an allen key socket?
jim
They are tough at first, have you tried an allen key socket? I would if I had one, or knew what it looked like. If I know what to look for a trip to Halfords will be required.
3FIDDYZ
Serious? Have you done this type of thing before? Its an easy job but helps if you know your way around the engine... If you have a socket set then sometimes you get allen key attachemtns, if not buy one that does have the allen keys attachments. There are also extension pars thus giving you more purchase on the bolt... Be careful when using as you are pretty fooked if you snap the head off a bolt... And also dont use the sockets to tighten the bolt when your done... One of the socket screwdrivers with the allen key bit in the end and a gloved hand is more favourable as you wont over tighten or just buy a torque wrencd that has interchangable ends to take the socket... H5
It's a 'socket' that has the allen key as the attachment - they look like this http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur ... N%26um%3D1 Just go a bit easy as Mark says
jim
Serious? Have you done this type of thing before? Yes - but not recently. In my day, there was not much call for allen sockets. Its an easy job but helps if you know your way around the engine... If you have a socket set then sometimes you get allen key attachemtns, if not buy one that does have the allen keys attachments. There are also extension pars thus giving you more purchase on the bolt... I have a couple of socket sets, but neither of them have allen sockets. Be careful when using as you are pretty fooked if you snap the head off a bolt... That's why I asked about using WD40. Will it help in this case? And also dont use the sockets to tighten the bolt when your done... One of the socket screwdrivers with the allen key bit in the end and a gloved hand is more favourable as you wont over tighten or just buy a torque wrencd that has interchangable ends to take the socket... Thanks for all the advice. Do you happen to know what torque settings are recommended for these bolts, and for those around the plenum itself
Martin W
Tell me about it - took me real courage to do this a couple of weeks ago No movement at all then all of a sudden they just came free. Accompanied by a sound that was suspiciously like a bolt snapping worked tho' and yes - Tony squirted loads of WD40 or equiv in ..... Chris`I
Not sure if these are thread locked in but it sounds pretty much like they are. In which case the only way to get them out is with pure leverage and WD40 wont do anything for them. They give quite a frightening snap when thread lock breaks! Also would explain why some people find it easier than others as it depends on how much thread lock was used at the factory, or if they've been removed before, if they bothered to add threadlock when replacing the bolts! jim
I can confirm that they make a very loud noise when they release! Once released, though, the job was pretty straightforward, and I managed to change the plenum cover fairly quickly after that. Thanks to Jerry for the polished plenum. Also finished off some of the other bits of bling under the bonnet today. Here are some gratuitous pics.
3FIDDYZ
Looks great Jim Sorry didnt mean my post earlier to sound condisending either, it wasnt meant that way  Page 5 http://www.motordyneengineering.com/manual.pdf has the torque settings, 80 Inch / lbs on all and then 7-18 (outers) at 100 inch / lbs As Chris said, prob loctited in there, the plenum spaced do come with a little tube so best to use some? mine didnt and seems to still be ok! Chris`I
Dont remember my plenum spacer coming with any thread lock, might have done thought, but Phils mechanics were nearly done before I could see, they were too quick! I think the plenum bolts themselves tighten in with heat cycling, thats why you arent meant to do them up more than you can with a hand driver and glove. jim
No problems, Mark. And thanks for the guide - I'll double check the torque settings later, but I was careful not to overdo them! The gasket still had a bit of lube on it, and I was careful to re-seat it properly before offering up the new plenum. It all went together again very easily. Thanks to all for the help and very welcome advice. What a great forum this is!
