tmJak
Sorry Chris but I've got to say (and its only IMHO) MX5's are gay cars Dude - i fully agree with you... They're almost as gay as Mini's. But then it doesnt matter what it looks like if it drives well on track I wouldn't drive it in public, and would be stripping it and making it track ready. And its different enough to keep it interesting. Would MX-5's be difficult to control if you're over 5'2''? When I borrowed my Mum's (not a good start) I struggled to get in it and move the wheel without hitting my knees

manc350z
Ok.. leftfield and gutless... but tuneable.. possibly will only ever be worth more than you pay as well.. and you can get the backend out by just looking at these - 1983 ford capri 1.6 laser - One on autotrader at 995quid... ! 1979 2.0ghia mk4 ford cortina (manual) in bright orange.. looks ok .. 500 quid ! Especially the orange 'tina.. class.. pure class..
Stew
'tina.... nice! At 6'2" and 6'5" I doubt you'll be comfortable in an MX5. They are very good though.
k1ano
There is also the completely left-field option of a Celica GT4, which you could pick up for around 1k ... You also have the benefit of having been in one and seeing what they can do. No electronic traction aids or stuff messing about with things like the Scooby or Evo either (and you couldn't get one of them for 1k). IMHO potentially very cheap fun Depends if you want a cheap 4wd option, complete with turbo, but they can be money pits unless you get a good one. There are plenty of good ones around and 2 or 3 dedicated forums with for sale sections i.e. gt4oc.net, gt4ec.net and gt4dc.com, not to mention piston heads. Digsy
Some of the suggestions are great if the car's just for drifting but try doing a regular track day in an old Sierra/Cortina!
rtbiscuit
still think the mk1 supra is a good bet http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1989-TOYOTA-SUPRA ... 1|294%3A50 if i did rallying i'd have a mk1 escort done out in proper rally slag getup. the capri is a good option, and great fun. the old carltons are good, also tuned up old mini's my mate has one for track days with a 2 litre vauxhall engine in it and it out accelerates the Zed easily. as it weighs bugger all, parts are easy and cheap to come by and they're great to drive. k1ano
Oh yes them there Supras are mad cars for the money but again quite a lot to go wrong I guess - all depends on whether you can pick up a good example cause the Japanese cars, as we all know, are pretty reliable if looked after. manc350z
Some of the suggestions are great if the car's just for drifting but try doing a regular track day in an old Sierra/Cortina! I've seen an 80's capri track car... it was a beast, highly tuned 2.8i v6 with major weight reduction, i.e. all the interior had left was 1 seat, dials, a stering wheel, door handles, and an ignition start / cutoff and light switches.. it also had a cage, competition fuel tank, a decent brake conversion , upgraded wheel / tyre combo and some trick suspension upgrades.. oh yeah..and the funniest mod i have ever seen - about 80kilos of concrete in the back where the spare wheel was supposed to be... it was quick and looked controllable. It turned up at an open trackday at Oulton.. it embaressed a lot of expensive metal and the geezer driving it was good... I reckon it was worth a lot more than a bag of sand though.. the cage and fuel tank alone would have been about that much! I'd settle for one as a fun drifting car .. ok maybe not the jaffa orange 79 'tina mk4.. that is asking for it really...
k1ano
dan4, you'd be surprised how cheap the GT4 and spares are TBH, like any car that was around basically between 1987 and 1999 and only 3 model variants. But yes as a track car a std (cheap as chips) GT4 would not be ideal without certain upgrades such as brakes and perhaps some suspension tweaks. As a drift car they are a lot of fun and arguably more fun, in terms of what you can do with the car being 4wd, than a straight RWD car. This, IMHO, is largely because the GT4 has no electronic aids and so is a raw driving experience, and it also has a Torsen LSD in the back and a viscous coupling centre diff for true 4 wheel powersliding and easy oversteer. Anyway lots of debate going on and quite a few options too for under that magic 1k :-) Martin

Bulletproof engine and nice and light
3FIDDYZ
You could have had a free ford sierra 2000 Gave my dads one away after he passed, wish I had kept it now and had a play about with it but needed to sort his stuff out quick... Stew
Was looking in the local paper last night and a Celica GT4 jumped out at me.... TRACK car, upgraded wheels, suspension, buckets etc etc. £700 with some problems.... It humped out after the talk on this thread.

IanS16
Did you ever find a car Chris? I had a thought, what about a Pulsar GTiR? Pulsar - 189bhp per tonne (with 4WD) 350Z - 181bhp per tonne I'd say it'd be pretty fast
Jon350z
Problem with the older Celica GT4's is that the 185's are really really heavy and the even older 165's are really unreliable. I've thought about getting another ST205 as a track car but they are like 3k I'd say either a s13 or a mx-5 edit: Or even something like this, on know its not rwd but would be great fun on the track. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1074607.htm
