AK350Z
I've got a Canon A590 which has options for manual control, and i was wondering how you get the effect where you have the center of the shot (usually fairly close up) in focus and the rest blurry. It is possible on my camera?
ARphotographs
choose a wide aperture, such as f2.8 or so to get a good depth of field, which is where you focus on one thing yet the rest goes out of focus.
AK350Z
Ok, i'll try that. On a side note; what does the f value actually mean though?
Chris`I
choose a wide aperture, such as f2.8 or so to get a good depth of field, which is where you focus on one thing yet the rest goes out of focus. By good, you of course mean a small depth of field Ok, i'll try that. On a side note; what does the f value actually mean though? The F stop is how open the aperture of the lense is. Crazily, the smaller the number, the more open the aperture is, and also the smaller the number, the larger the f-stop actually is. More info here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number. The more open the lense, the less depth of field you have, or put simply, the less that will be in focus in front or behind the bit you focused on. Best thing to do is to take pics of something against a background that is a distance away, say a few cups against a wall a few feet away that has a pattern. Distance them out and then take photos of them with varying apertures and see what varying them does. Large aperture (small f-value) will result in very little being in focus. Small aperture (large number) will result in more being in focus
ARphotographs
by good i meant, shallow, not small as that was what he was asking for, think of the aperture as your eye, lots of light your pupils get smaller to let in less light, when its dark they get bigger, to let in more light. AK350Z
Had a go, but my camera only goes down to f2.8 anyway, so the effect isn't very pronounced. Putting the macro mode on helped a little bit though. Some quick and dirty practices after cleaning the Zed from its week away:

Putting the macro mode on helped a little bit though. Some quick and dirty practices after cleaning the Zed from its week away: Looks good bud. The problem with these kinds of cameras, is although its @ f2.8, f2.8 is different at different focal lenghs, so as the compact camera has a very small focal length the effect is less pronounced compared to say an SLR. To get the most pronounced effect, you could try zooming in but stepping away from the car. The extra focal length will make the effect more pronounced. On my zoom lense, if I take pics of motorsport in rubbish light, I can sometimes have part of the car in focus and most of it out because of long focal length I have a great PDF somewhere of the functions for the Canon 300D and explains all about this stuff. Its pretty big at 45mb but I could try and dig it out and stick it up somewhere for you to download it if you are interested in the effects of aperatures and shutter speeds on your pics
AK350Z
Do they not have it up for download somewhere? edit: is this it? http://finearts.uvic.ca/sim/equipment/manuals/_photography/canoneosrebel.PDF

Its not an instructional manual but a proper book, so no official download
