Ekona
Nope, I do it too along with resetting the trip counter too. Always nice to know just how hard I've been driving the car per tankful

neil2185
32?Crikey, not bad going. After reading other average MPG threads on here before I kind of expected mine to be around the 20 mark. Just put a bit of confidence in me that the car might not have been ragged everywhere by the previous owner. It's something I don't like to think about when buying cars because there's absolutely no way of knowing how it's been treated. Suppose if it's all still in one piece and not making any funny noises that's also a good sign. Am I right in thinking that you have just bought it with that MPG reading, that I am afraid to say means nothing. Every car I have sold a day or two before the sale I have reset the trip computer and driven very carfully, like stupidly carful, and then when they view the car they see the mpg is high and make the same assumption that you did that the car has only ever been driven by my gran! Thats why you reset it and take it for a drive
neil2185
I would reset too when I test drive but that wouldnt give any indication of how the current owner has been driving it

nixy
After spending all weekend on the motorway (more or less) even though I was driving very quickly I got nearly another 100 miles from a tank full to what I usually get in the stop start traffic every day to work. Ebized
Getting back the title question - tyre condition (not wear) is the probably the best indicator as to how hard the car has been driven
matth76
I've managed 38/39 mpg on a steady 70mph run on motorway.

Stew
I had a pick in an old phone of about 70mpg or something. It was a bit instantaneous but funny none the less.
Liam's Z
I've managed 38/39 mpg on a steady 70mph run on motorway. Haha Liam you haven't changed mate. High mpg can easily be frigged by resetting an driving sensibly for a day. As for stone chips I do see the nooby dealers point. If your thrashing the pants off any car, say 90ish lol then that stone chip may hurt slightly more than a 70 one ... wizard
how the f00k do you mofo's get 40mpg... are we driving the same bloody car!? I get 14... yes 14 MPG average!

MattMe
I did know that it could be reset and that it's not a reliable method or determining whether a car has been driven well or not. My point was supposed to be that I was surprised that the car achieved such a high average MPG - I was expecting 20ish mpg. At the moment, in the last couple days of driving (no motorway or dual carriageway really) I'm on about 23ish which I'm thinking isn't too bad. It might get a bit better once I calm down a bit and the excitement wears off. I hope it does soon or I can see me being a regular visitor at the tyre shop... I'd assume it's how efficiently the fuel is burning etc, every car will run richer or leaner than the next one to a small degree.. condition of spark plugs, maf sensor, injectors, ecu mapping etc all affect it, plus of course your driving style, how hard you accelerate in each gear, change gear etc. Could be that yours may be slightly over fuelling meaning you'll be running rich burning more fuel resulting in lower mpg..which is definitely better than running lean (which results in pinking and det) but worth checking out next time you're at a specialist. I was really trying hard to see what mpg I could get it up to but without driving like a granny. Of course I can easily get it below 20mpg I had done a reset on the day I got the high mpg. Overall since I bought my car a few months back I think the average mpg is around 25 or 28mpg.. will check in morn.
