roy_watson
I bought a JDM a few weeks back and it only has a bog standard cd/tape player (non bose). I am getting no sound from the speakers behind the seats (i'm not quite sure if there are even any speakers in the enclosures at all, i will need to look). I was looking at the JVC KD-AVX1 http://jvcmobile.co.uk/product.php?pr=46 and was wondering if anyone has any experience of this, what it sounds like and how much of a job it was to get it installed? Halfords offer free instore fitting of this unit, do you think they would balk at having to fit it into a 350z and should i even trust them in the first place or look to go to an audio specialist? Thanks
350Znismo
I take it your current unit is 2 din (as large as two head units) so will need to fit a 1 din conversion (i think this will be above Halfords scope) Currys are doing them for £319 but you will need to fit them. High spec unit for the money but only Video not MP4, so to use the DVD you will need to carry the full film on DVD.
roy_watson
Thanks for the quick reply, im more interested in the ability to play mp3's via a DVD than film playback so what you mention wouldnt put me off. The section it would be fitted in is 2 DIN and I had a suspicion it would be beyond Halfords! If i sourced the unit myself what would do you think would be an average cost you would expect a reputable ICE dealer to install it for ( as i think doing it myself would be a recipe for disaster!). 350Znismo
Give Sextons a ring and they would quote you about £35 hr (2 hrs) but you will need to get the 1 din converter for them. If you say you are not looking for DVD play back, try this one (you can add a screen in the chubby box later), and it plays MP3 from DVD for £79. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/In-Car-DVD-CD-MP3 ... dZViewItem and it plays MP4
roy_watson
do you know of anywhere i can get a 1 DIN convertor?

roy_watson
Am i right in saying i would need to buy a Metra harness like.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %3AIT&rd=1 which i could attach the headunit to and slot into the space, and use an ISO adapter like... http://www.bluespot.co.uk/install/show_model.asp?id=348 to attach the headunit to the internal wiring? Thats what you need it will fill the space of you old unit with a small storage pocket, and fit your new head unit. see here http://www.350z-uk.com/gallery/displayi ... 0&pos=-402 and the wiring is an iso (plug and play) lead. After that you just push in the new unit.
roy_watson
I had a read of the instructions provided with the Metra Harness and it seems to be relatively straightforward to take the old headunit out and put the new one in. So long as the PC2-72-4 ISO adaptor is the correct one i should just about manage it myself???

l33r0y
The 'American International' is supposed to be better quality radio kit, with the 'Metro' brand a close second. Also be aware that the MY06 Z has a slightly revised centre console which requires a new radio kit to fill the gap, particularly at the bottom. CAD do the AVX1 for £309.98 delivered, I've used them before and recommend them. If you need help installing your kit, their forums are an excellent source of info. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product ... ts_id=4166
roy_watson
I ordered the head unit from Dixons for 299 including postage using a promotion code i found online, if anyone wants 20 bucks off a dixons order enter "ONLINE20" in the promotion code box! Once everything arrives i'll have a go at installing it!

roy_watson
I used to have a Sony MP3 cd player in my old car so kinda got used to having a whole load of music on the 1 cd. When i got my Z it was a pain having to keep swapping CD's in and out so i looked at hooking an IPOD up to it, but i didnt hear good things about the FM links so rejected that idea. When i came across the JVC on a website and read about it playing 8+ GB of MP3's from a DVD it was too good to resist at that price! It has had good reviews for its sound quality too which i found to be pretty poor on the standard Z headunit. How do the stock speakers sound with new headunits?? I have the IPOD and the dension ice link FM which is quite good indeed. overall volume is lower than the CD or radio, but cranked up to 20 is loud enough and music quality is still good, albeit not CD quality. That unit seems cool because of the little screen for dvd's etc for what I'm intereste din
roy_watson
I took delivery of the DVD player today and had a go at attempting to install it myself.... I managed to remove the front panel and unscrew the harness to get the old tape/cd player out but i couldnt get the wiring out of the old CD player!!! I pulled as hard as i could but they wouldnt budge, has anyone ever come across this on a JDM? I may have to bite the bullet and take it to an ICE specialist to install it if noone can tell me how the wiring unplugs....
350Znismo
Look for side clips on the plug that enters the radio it will need to be pressed in with two screwdrivers then pulled
roy_watson
One of the plugs had 2 black things on each side which seemed to move up and down. Are these what your talking about? The other plug didnt have any of these....
350Znismo
yes they are clips to stop the wires working loose
roy_watson
Ok so if i press both of these down it should be easy enough just to pull them out? Sounds like a 2 person job to me, will maybe give it another go tonight.
