R800NER
Everytime I bring my new zed back to the house, there is a strong smell of burning plastic, quite a horrid smell which I am led to believe could be the clutch going? Is this going to be an expensive fix?
martinmac
If its your clutch I would recommend you sorting it soon or you will need a new flywheel too. Worth considering upgrading.
R800NER
Sorry I don't quite understand the mechanics behind the flywheel getting damaged too? Is there a simple explanation for it? I haven't driven it hard or ridden the clutch, even a trip round the block leaves a rather pungent smell....Clutch hasn't slipped as far as I am aware... How much would a new clutch cost inc fitting as a ballpark?
Trev-the-Rev
Put it in 4th gear and floor it around 2000 rpm if the clutch doesn't slip then your problem is elsewhere.
Stew
Never smelt a burning plastic smell...... Have you checked that nothing cold is hitting something hot like the manifold.....
Chris`I
Sounds to me that something plastic is hitting something hot rather than the clutch if the clutch isnt slipping. Have a look underneath and make sure there isnt a platic bag stuck to some of the exhaust or something.
R800NER
hmmm right I did the old handbrake and pull away with clutch trick and it stalled and clutch seems fine. It is definately a smell on the drivers side behind the wheel arch... which side does the exhaust run down? I am thinking it could be exhaust related. I will get it up on the ramps and have a look. Stew
Here's a clue....
Stew
though it does have an aftermarket exhaust but you get the jisy. On the standard exhaust the the pipes join after the cats (goldy boxes in the pic) at the Y pipe then it's one pipe the the backbox.
Beavis
Could even be an electrical burning smell
R800NER
Sorry for being a numpty, I have limited technical knowledge! I had thought that the exhaust split into two at the backbox... but then I am a noobie! Hmmm, so what's the best way of figuring this out?? Electrical? Is there a specialist that could tell me? or a member?

Maybe see if there is an owner based locally that might help out. If not I'd take it to a garage to be honest.

mc
Mine quite often smells 'hot' if you know what I mean lol... not like burning plastic which is quite pungent, but something maybe like rubber although I can't find anything under the bonnet, it has done it for a while now
Ebized
Sniff this out http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewtopic ... rnt+bumper
WoREoD
I had this on a car once. Turned out I'd picked up one of those supermarket carrier bags that blow around our roads and it was snagged on an exhaust clip and melting onto the hot exhaust. Quite difficult to remove once they've started to melt......
mc
well my 50 mile commute home last night didn't cause any funny smells (from the car!) I'm thinking that the plastic bag theory could be what caused it, will have to see if it happens again. Thanks for the link Ebized, my exhaust needs re-hanging as its slightly higher on one side and virtually touches the bumper.
manc350z
Mine can sometimes smell like burning clutch / brakes etc.. but only after spirited driving and late .. ahem.. braking / accidental drifting.. :0) ..quite normal..
Jammy007
On my FTO I had a burning smell coming from the car, was very noticeable once getting out of the car after a run. Looked underneath and there was something plastic (probably a carrier bag) stuck to my mongoose. Took a bit of scraping to get it off there but made me feel 10 times better once I'd actually realised what it was. Get on your hands and knees and have a good look! Can't do any harm if you don't touch anything, thats my motto!
IanS16
I had a hole in the flexi pipe on my Y pipe so whenever I stood still for over 10 seconds the exhaust fumes would come up over the sides of the car. It didn't smell like the fumes coming out of the exit pipes, it smelled more like burning but it went when I had my Y pip fixed.
