N1SM0350z
I was just wondering if any of you tell your insurance company when you change your wheels, as I was just about to purchase a set ot 18" M3 wheels and then I phoned my insurance company and they wanted an extra £120!!! even though they dont insure the wheels. ie you get back standard ones if u have an accident!! so im not going to bother I dont want to pay them anymore as I already payed £1700 for 10 months!! S1 HNK
I've told mine, it is annoying that they charge more and dont even cover them but then again it would be a hell of a lot more annoying if they refused to pay out because i hadn't told them! MITZ@CougarStore
Chris Knott also cover like for like, call them to confirm this…
S1 HNK
Yes the companies that 'advertise' specialists in modified cars do cover them but for me weren't as competitive on cost as others. I spoke to elephant about this and they said it is because it makes the car more desirable so higher risk of theft. Its just a way of making more money! N1SM0350z
well Bell were the only people that would insure me for under £2500 so cant really change it.
martinmac
As CS says I am also with Chris Knott who cover like for like replacements. As far as I remember their basic criteria is at least 22 and 2 years experience of similar cars.
M13KYF
they will put up the excess to keep the premium low with you having modded wheels
skyinsurance
This is why it pays to pick your insurance compamy very carefully.. if you are planning on modifying the car then you should pick an insurance company who will understands the mods and will not penalise you for adding them to your car. My company would not charge for costemtic mods like wheels Ollie Sky Insurance
Andy
+1 am insured myself with Sky and they covered the lot for me for a cracking price! I suspect the insurance company want more for your wheels as it will increase the risk of it being stolen. On a side note as well, if they are genuine E46 M3 wheels, they won't fit your car

With the checks that go on now I would not risk putting mods like wheels which are highly visible without delairing them on the insurance. Consider it a lesson in insurance management. *EDIT* Wait a minute, M3 wheels on a 318i?! That's doubled the value of the car, and you wonder why they want extra money to insure you on it?! Yes they were genuine M3 wheels and they did fit had this discussion on Bimmerforums and so i went to try them before I bought them and they fitted quite nicely only thing to do was reduce the profile of the tyres to keep the rolling radius closer and have a bit more clearance just in case, but that wasnt really necesary as they fitted any way. Ive got cuple of pics on my fone I need to try and get on to the comp.

N1SM0350z
Ive heard all this offset talk wot is the offset im alitte confused Well my argument was that the wheels on there already are 245/40/17 rears and 225/45/17 front and the M3's are 255/40/18 rear and 225/40(ithink)/18 front. so only 10mm wider at the rear. I was worried that they might rub at the rear as the current ones are close but because of the different design they come out of the rear arch about 10-20mm the fronts were bang on
