phil wel
Hi guys I'm a new comer to the world of the z and only bought my 52 Import a couple of weeks ago. I have a major problem getting 3rd (both from 2nd and down shift from other gears) to the point at anything over 4K from second it crunches horribly. Anyone heard of anything similar? My greatest fear is a new 'box but I have a 3 month warranty on the car. Thanks Phil Wel
WoREoD
I occasionally get a crunch into 3rd from 4th (and also into 5th from 6th) at medium revs. I began to worry about the box, but it seems to only happen on selected days. I'm suspicious that when I'm in a hurry and stress levels aren't low I'm not concentrating enough on the change and may not be de-pressing the clutch enough. A bit worrying but I've got a longer warranty to worry about it and work it out.
Kev946
This sounds very much like one of 2 things: - 1. The clutch is just dragging a bit and not fully disengaging 2. The Syncromesh is worn. My daughters Renault Megane gearbox had this, and it always crunched when changing down at higher revs from 4th to 3rd. Basically the worn syncro could not cope. If the revs were lower it was fine. 1) may go away with usuage and a bit of hammer on the clutch. 2) is repearable by a specialist and not necessarily a new gearbox. l33r0y
52 import sounds like an early model. According to my350z posters, the 350Z is now on its 7th revision of gearbox!

Sounds a bit ominous !! Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have a go at hammering the clutch (i'm probably just being a bit weak ) Short of that I'll probably go and visit my local nissan dealer !!! Cheers
l33r0y
Read into that what you will about the 7th revision though. It could mean anything from using different materials, improved manufacturing process to fixing gremlins. Suffice to say, the gearbox on the Z isn't a weak link. g_torphins
As Kev said it sounds like your synchromesh. I had my 'box replaced after 3rd to 5th and 4th to 5th changes started being really stiff and grinding!! Get ready for a BIG bill if you're going to a dealer
