kustard
Badly dislocated my shoulder on Tuesday playing footy, so in a sling and not allowed to drive - doctors orders. All a bit frustrating really as now have a 40 min walk and 30 min train ride to work- Ugh!. Anyone done similar and have any rough indications on how long before I can get behind the wheel? Doc says sling should be on for about 6 weeks, but other people reckon a couple of weeks before driving is ok. I suppose it's a case of how much I want to risk longer term damage - so probably a stupid question

kustard
Doc said 50% chance of it happening again after the first time, and if it happens again i'll need to get it pinned. Got a skiiing hol planned for Jan which looks like it's going to have to be scratched off too At least I didn`t break anything I guess. marzman
Bet you wish you had an auto like me - can drive it now! May be worth finding out where u stand legally - i had spine surgery in April and was told i couldnt drive for 6 weeks, as if anything happened i would be covered by insurance. ...i was back in the driving seat after 8 days though

Greekman
sorry to hear m8...visited closely a petrol station many years ago on a yamaha tdm 900 pulling wheelies and changing gears...stupid kidz....and wrote it off...and almost wrote off my right shoulder as well.... as its more or less my job (dentist but with excellent knowledge of anatomy) i have to tell u that depending on the severity of the injury and the state of the ligaments and the condition of your muscles u may find out that even 6 weeks are not enuf...i has to stay immobilized and u need strong anti-inflammatories...then physio and weights...lots of them...i took me two years to fully recover and avoid the surgery and 4 years know i can do press ups with 120kg with no probs whatsoever...although it doesnt feel the same....keep in mind that weights make ur ligaments stronger as well!!! anything else feel free to ask...but do as u are told from ur doctor for now....surgery is really costly and v difficult and definitely not for the nhs!!!!! bronzee
One thing that may come into play, if your specialist doesn't give you clearance, ie think it's safe for you to drive with your gammy shoulder, and you do, and something horrible happens, would your insurance cover the damage? Had to go through that when I badly busted an ankle, cleared with both specialists and insurance before I drove, you know just in case. Insurance companies don't need much of an excuse. kustard
Cheers for the replies all. As for how I did it, basically lost footing on the astro running for the ball and completely bundled forwards straight on shoulder, then to top it off smashed into a wooden board at the side of the pitch at almost full tilt, which is what basically pushed it out. Nearly passed out and was in cold sweats and everything, all pretty weird. had to be taken to A+E where they stuck me on a drip and gave me some drugs which knocked me out. Woke up with it popped back in - don't remember a thing - except how much it hurt and siezed up. Sounds like i'll be needing to take it carefully then and not try any Rambo heroics. Seeing the Physio tom so will see what they say!
