RichieRodriguez
Hiya, I Just joined the forum tonight! Am totally interested in getting a zed, but would like it to be a bit of a project, so not 100% sure where to start (how cheap I can start, I probably mean). Thought I'd join in and see what I can find out from the more knowledgeable ones.... Run a Leon Cupra TDI at the moment, so want to use that to fund some of this...I'm just at the ideas stage at the moment. My first problem is deciding which colour Z I like, got about 4 favs at the mo... Anyway, glad to be on board. Rich

Digsy
Hi and welcome! The cheapest (high mile imports) seem to be coming in under £10k at the moment. Nice start for a project....
Stew
Whats the final outcome of the project?

bronzee
Welcome Rich, have a nosey around the for sales here. Colour is often secondary, depending on what you after, if you have one that is structurally, mechanically sound that's pretty ace. But hey everyone is different. RichieRodriguez
Cheers for the details guys! I find my Cupra to be fantastic for the work run, get round about 50MPG with the cruise on and motorway miles, and fantastic torque so getting up to speed on the motorway is safe and fun too. But, I do fancy a car that I can take the time to build up, as and when I can afford changes, much like everyone else really. I've been looking around for ages, like lots of options, such as Honda S2000, but I think that the 350Z is a better car to drive from what I have read and actually prefer the looks. I know that's mostly personal choices, but seems this is defo a winner in my book. I think I'll still need a diesel for miles involved with my working day, so I'll have to talk tot he boss and see what happens there. Anyway, think I'll check out the site, defo keep an eye on what's for sale etc and go from there. One thing I do like is the tan leather in the GT pack. Think that looks fab, so can you get that put in (say picking up the seats etc from a salvage if I was really lucky to find them) and add them as aftermarket mod or does that have to come as part of factory install? (I just realised that I maybe ought to read the site before opening these questions up, so feel free to point me at a particular post, otherwise I'll go looking and maybe just take abit longer...) Thanks again guys. I'll defo try to think about coming along to a meet at some point. Rich
Kevo
If you want a real project you can always get an accident damaged example, like mine. Then you could always start a fresh, and can replace damaged parts for a kit (if you are looking for a money saver that is!). Picked mine up damaged, really great example, aslong as you know what you are doing, you cant go wrong! Anyway, Welcome to the forum Rich! RichieRodriguez
Cheers Kevo, I have actually been looking at salvage recovered but just not seen anything that looks remotely like it's repairable, all look to be high speed impacts and so massive damage. So advice on choosing what, and where to look (online I guess would be my starting point), would be helpful. How did you find your car? And how much could I expect to pay less than a non damaged car? Kevo
You are always taking the risk when buying a damaged car, there are alot out there with severe damage. I would try to get one with the damage concentrated in one area. Mine was front offside damage, so i only had to rebuild the front end of the car, the last thing you want to do is buy a car where you have to start replacing quarter pannels, doors and roofs, well depending on the capital available and time span. I'm perfectly fine with having a damaged car, as i'm very confident about my rebuilding skills, and i know i have done a very good job on it. If you are compitant, then you should be ok. Take someone along with you if you view one, and take an acdcurate tape as well, do all the measurements to check for pillar and chassis damage, as jigging can destroy your budget. Another sugestion is to start sourcing parts before you buy the car, this was my only mistake, as i have had to wait ages for some parts to pop up. and its costly, as you may have to visit the stealer a few times!! I got an early 2004 UK GT in blade with 35k on the clock, in perfect cond (apart from the damaged parts lol) for just under £9k (bartered it down £750 though), mind you it was unrecorded (uninsured loss) so i wont lose any money at resale. so thats a £5k saving. All in (its nearly done now) it has cost me around £4k to fix, but i have done 100% of the work myself (apart from spraying). What hit me was the £1.2k i payed for parts from a stealer, as i couldn't source them anywhere else (this was before i joined here, so some lads will be able to help, i'm sure) this was with a 30% discount as well (connections hay!!). Got my car from a friend, he owns a salvage company and specialises in Z's. I'll give him a tinkle and see what he has got (if he has at the moment though). Be able to get you a good deal as well
RichieRodriguez
Just wanted to say thanks for the great feedback/info on here already. I'm now actively working on the day to day car option which I use to and from work, plus for work sometimes...should have an idea of that before the end of the month If all goes to plan, I'll have a Leon Cupra for sale... Kevo, if I do get this far, will probably drop you a line about sourcing and also more detailed tips (particularly the sizes/dimensions that need checking (presume you must have the diagram with the dimension on!)). Cheers, Rich
Kevo
Yeah no worries Rich, let me know what you are looking for, if you decide you want to go down this route, and i will have a look around for you. Yeah have all the schematics for the z, will send to you, again, if you decide to follow the damaged route.
