Cool Hand Luke
Read a snippet in Autocar the other week that i meant to post about. Basically, US car maker Infiniti (Nissan's luxury brand) are now producing cars with self healing paint - the paint contains an elastic resin that when heated can 'heal' over scratches and other paint imperfections. How cool is that? Here's hoping we see it in Europe sometime soon, maybe on the new GTR or 370Z
RobD7
Sounds pretty impressive although believe it when I see it!
martinmac
If its this one they have been trialling it for some time, not heard of any progress or tests though. http://www.we-make-money-not-art.com/ar ... ing-pa.php http://www.engadget.com/2005/12/02/niss ... oat-paint/ Believe the 08 Infinits get it in the US. http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/304983
Cool Hand Luke
Google for 'infiniti self healing paint' and you'll see its the real deal, its being used on the 2008 Infiniti EX35
martinmac
As you say, hopefully we will see it over here soon.
Z Boy
That's epic! I imagine it'll have it's work cut out on Z paint and UK roads though, it'll probably crap itself trying to keep up with the stone chips!
M13KYF
moved yeah nissan has had the developed the paint a year or so ago. Good to see that its making the production line
bigphil
A friend of ours is paint manager at the Nissan Sunderland plant where they have been testing this for the past year he has said it is quite amazing how well it works.
Chesterfield
It will no doubt be more expensive than normal paint, so given how tight Nissan appear to have been with good old fashioned water based paint on the Z, this stuff will no doubt be put on so thin it will be almost bloody transparent
Z Boy
In the article I read it says it's only going to be an extra £250ish to have it added on as an extra. That's usually what most manufacturers charge just for metallic paint so not too bad.
Sarnie
I'd like to see exactly what type of scratches/stone chips it will actually repair itself.........
GC350z
The GTR was supposed to get some sort of miracle paint like this. Didn't seem to happen in the end.
DJsickboy
I wonder what happens over time with contanimation etc? How do you polish it also? the rotary would make it too warm surely? Sounds like a good idea though..

Zedrush
wasnt it nissan who were trying to develop a paint that when you heat up changes colour or did I dream this? Like Black to red, heating charges the molicules within the paint that generates a new look

adam.mt
I'm sure I recall reading the self-healing paint will be available on the special edition GT-R. Secondly I do recall reading a newpaper article from the Times (I think) about the colour-change paint saying it was blag. Basically about 6 months ago a number of Internet sites, and then mainstream press, featured an article about this colour changing paint with a picture of a multi-colour GT-R. Well it said that they'd looked into it and it wasn't true, rather a perfect example of how wrong information can be widely spread so easily nowadays. That said, somebody will probably now post to say "It is true, here's the evidence" but that's definitely what I read.

bronzee
It actually makes you wonder, as there are nailpolish [girly hat on today ], which is basically paint that will do odd things. For instance Lancome make a nailpolish that when it's wet, if you pass a magnet over the surface it changes form as it has tiny metal flakes that are attracted to the magnet. Lots of paints glow in the dark. So really not so far fetched a concept to do something like that with large scale items like car paint. stanski
I remember this was first mentioned in 2005 (Probably same link as before:) http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/NEWS/20 ... -01-e.html I had just got my Xtrail and hoped it would be available then - but nope! If they just went back to evil Celly or 2 pack (Not your water based rubbish today) we would'nt need self healing paint in the first place - or even just spray nail varnish gloss or better a thin solution of weetabix - that will weld itself quite nicely to the surface of your Datsun and never come off! Bit like pigeon sh**!
