mec
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this, I've had the car a couple of weeks now and starting to get to get a feel for it. I've noticed that 1st to 2nd is a little notchy... 5th to 6th at speed can feel a bit notchy too... It's not crunching so i don't think the syncros are shot, just giving a little more resistance that i expected if you know what i mean. The odd thing is, if i have given the car some beans on a good drive the gearbox is smooth through all gears... Do you think a gearbox oil change will help? or is this all completely normal Cheers Gi
Stew
how quick do you change? Try slowing down 1st to 2nd. Just leave an extra second when changing.
mec
yeah if i go slow or double declutch it is smooth. Once everything is very hot then even a fast change from 1st to 2nd is smooth.
Trev-the-Rev
What you're describing is a typical Zed gearbox. As has already been said, take your time on the changes when its cold and if its ok when hot then it should be fine.
dcash5
Depends what year zed u have the older ones has a crap syncro in the gear box which meant it was crunchy going 5th to 6th at speed.

Yeah, but that issue is worse when it's hot - not the case here Why not change for a synthetic gear oil - Amsoil do a good one
sinbad
i had nissan change my gearbox oil and it made my gearbox worse. i never had any problems with 1st -2nd until the oil was changed..
mec
Thanks guys, sounds like changing the oil could be hit or miss. I'll see if I can adjust my driving style first
mec
After trying for a while I found i couldn't live with it, it's going in on Weds next week to have the transmission oil changed. Had to ask Nissan nicely to do the work as they orginally said they wouldn't stick the oil i bought in it, they'd only stick in the Nissan stuff... but after a little chat they knew it was a known problem and agreed that changing it with the nissan oil (75w-85) would do nothing. One of the engineers said they had good results with some Mobil EP 80w-90 oil... So i had a look around but in the end went for Mobil Modilube 1 SHC 75w-90 off of Opie oils... if it doesn't work i will probably go with redline's heavyshock, but as Opie doesn't have it listed for the car i thought i'd try the Mobil (I didn't think it wise to go against Opie's judgement and price )... I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Ekona
I've used Redline MT-90 in the past and it's fantastic stuff, would definitely recommend it and it's what I'll use on the Zed when the time comes for me to change my gearbox oil. P15UL T
I always change my gearbox oil at every service and also use opie oils for all my lubricants. To be honest I think I'm quite lucky as I have never had any gearbox problems and when it's heated up it pretty solid Paul

mec
Got the car back and took it for a 10mile run, the box was warm but must say it feels better and quick changes don't crunch. It's not smooth as silk, but feels a lot less notchy.
mec
...hmm it's worse than before when cold. Anyone know how much it is to repair\exchange a box?
dcash5
try putting a gearbox additive in, molyslip or the like. Changing th box woul be about same price as replacing the clutch, just buying a box would be fairly expensive
mec
Is it safe to do that, anyone tried Molyslip on a z?
