accident - insurance advice needed

You won't believe this, (those that were around last september will remember), but my son has just after many painstaking months of being skint got his bike back as new after his accident last year. Gone for a ride out to the lakes today with a crowd - written it off! 3 of the party gone in air ambulance, he's thankfully ok. I don't know the details but it seems the accident with a lorry happened in front of him and he had to put the bike down. I am gutted for him - yet again he only had 3rd party insurance due to the cost. I'm clutching at straws here - if he had to put the bike down because of someone else's actions do you think he's got any chance of recovering anything?

Waiting for the full info and waiting for him to be brought home! He was out with very experienced adult riders, not a bunch of his young mates. I just wish he'd pack it in!

Well not sure on the insurance. Perhaps a small claims could be successful? If he's injured at all get digsy on the case!

My mates parents were out with some friends and one crashed. A car driver stopped and started giving them abuse about bikes going too fast. The guy that came off let them know that he was a class police rider and had been for 15 years! I think the car driver shut up and moved on....

It's scary how vulnerable you are on a bike but it's a thrill that can't be bettered!

Sorry to hear this Nixy.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and the chances are slim as he'd have to prove beyond a doubt that putting the bike down caused him to avoid joining the accident that was already taking place. Thus putting the bike down was actually part of the accident.

Some of the guys here with a history of bikes might know of a similar case.

Yes, that's what I was thinking - it's tricky with bikes because you are always more likely to just put it down to avoid being killed but it doesn't make it your fault just because you weren't hit. Have to wait and see - apols for any road blockages out your way Martin!

I am dreading him coming home it will be unbearable - to him it is like one of us losing our Z with no payout from insurance. I told him to take fully comp but it was mega bucks.

Damn sorry to hear that Nix! Such a shame, but as the others have said, I'm not sure he can put it on them if he wasnt actually in the accident. I think they will always take the official view that he should have been far enough back to stop. However this one seems a bit special as there were multiple bikes involved, so I'd get onto a proper claims specialist and see what they have to say.

I am down in London so well clear, off home tomorrow.

As the guys on last years Lakes meet know the roads up there are pretty awful, they are still using the dressing route to avoid repairing them properly. Its like driving on gravel. Add to that the large number of puppets that descend on us at this time of year and its pretty crazy.

Do you know where he was Nixy.

not yet, i'll let you know. Just sat here waiting to see what happens next - feel pretty helpless really but he's not on his own.

Plenty of people around and also plenty of recovery trucks as Chesterfield found out

H will be fine.

He'll be far more worried about his mates than himself Nic. And then he'll be gutted about his bike. I guess the shock will wear off just in time for his mum to give him a hug! :)

I'm afraid that on the limited information available it doesn't look too promising. Whether biker or driver you must travel at a speed and distance from the vehicle in front so that you can stop safely in an emergency situation. If the accident happened in front of him he may struggle.

However, without a far more detailed explanation I can't hope to give a definitive opinion. Feel free to PM me Nixy when you have more detailed info.

On the bright side I'm glad there were no serious injuries to your boy.

Can't have been Hawes - he is on the M6 in a taxi which suggests lakes as originally planned. He has just phoned in a panic - taxi driver says approx £300! I've tried to find out where he is and which way he's coming so I can go get him but he's in a state and surprisingly the taxi driver says he doesn't know where he's going, just following sat nav (you all know I'm a geography phobe!) I've told him to get out, find where he is and I'll come and get him but apparently he's only in his boxers and socks! - I'm leaving home..............after I've been to the bank I suppose!

Oh, and he can't blame anyone - he pannicked and stuck his brake on apparently - new brakes as well so pretty sharp! Must have gone over the top.

Your Liz could have picked him up, it would have been cheaper for me to salvage him from your house in the Z! Why didn't I think of that earlier....in fact you could have kept him there a few days!

well just to top it off - I have put my mobile phone in the washing machine! Not my machine as it's bust (another miserable tale) so now I am incomunicado with the whole bloody world! If I was the sort of girl that swore lots the air would be blue but I think I'll go away and have a cry!

Yes, I CAN hear you laughing!

Bloody hell Nixy, sounds like you are getting rid of all the bad luck at once :scare:

Assuming he is home by now, where was the accident.

Nobody deserves a couple of days at our house  Would cost a lot more than £300 for the councelling.

Just thinking about how bad the bike is and getting it from where it is now.

Just thought if Police have finished with it ?- I have a van and I am off work for a week and a half ??? Happy to help Nic? Lakes is only an hours drive (ok so in the van a bit longer but no matter?)

Will it spill oil over my shiny plywood lining! :p

:scare: terrible ordeal, at least he sounds ok, so most important item is alright.

I suspect that between us all we have most of the country covered so we could always help in future if needed. Although you're in the wrong part of the country for me to be of assistance.

Sounds a financial pain though. re: phone do as suggested they are fairly well built in the main so should be alright tomorrow.

Hopefully you've had your three things now and all will become better.

Really hope it turns out as well as possible, maybe a close enough escape to curb his biking enthusiasm for a bit.
