Girl Racer
Hi, I'm a female Z owner hoping for some good advice here. I have a 2007 facelift 350Z, factory standard so no mods (yet!). I lost my clutch on Friday night, the pedal went straight to the floor and fluid leaked onto the ground. Had the AA take a look and the chap said it was the slave cylinder. He also said the gearbox would need to be dropped to do the repairs. I know a bit about cars but not enough to hold my own against an unscrupulous mechanic, so as a chick I don't want to go to a garage and be scammed in the typical fashion that a lot of women are. Could someone please give me an idea of what this repair might entail? Could it just be a hose or seal replacement, or could I be looking at an entire clutch kit etc.....? And any idea of £££ would be appreciated. This is the first ever failure on the car (16 years of blissful driving!) so I don't have a mechanic, hence I need urgent advice to avoid being taken for a ride (pun intended). Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Cheers. Girl Racer
ZMANALEX
If an HR then box will have to be removed. When in there replacing the CSC then best to swop out the clutch cover and plate and possibly the DMF. Expect to pay circa £2000.00 with an uprated CSC
Girl Racer
Thanks for your reply. Re the cause, I'm guessing it's just age-related, 16-year-old parts now starting to give up the ghost? I've done less than 49k miles, but I do drive like I'm making the next Fast & Furious movie.........
Ben350
I was in the exact same boat as you last September when my slave cylinder went, sadly the stock ones are prone to it. Think mine was on about 60k when it went. I bought a full reinforced slave cylinder, clutch and lightweight flywheel kit from Tarmac Sportz and getting it all fitted was about £300, but the parts themselves are the expensive bit, about £1100 total it cost me. I'll link the kit for you if you're interested - https://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/nissan-370z-350z-hr-07-stage-1-competition-clutch-kit-with-tarmac-sportz-lightweight-flywheel-heavy-duty-csc.html
Jack94
As Alex has said, sadly with the HR Nissan somehow decided it was a good idea to locate the slave cylinder within the gearbox, so you might as well replace all the consumables whilst you're in there. However if you've got a late registered rev-up then the slave cylinder is mounted externally so it's a far quicker/cheaper job to replace. Girl Racer
Thanks for the link Ben Jack - It's a 57 reg, but I'm sure the AA chap said the slave cylinder was inside the gearbox hence it would need to be dropped......

Have you got one airbox or two? DE/Revup has one, HR has two...

HEADPHONES
Welcome to the OC If you are anywhere near Derby I'd try and get the car to Tarmacsportz. Contact @buster , he's done so many clutch replacements on Zeds that I can't imagine anyone else doing the job better.

Girl Racer
I'm in West London so Derby is not an option, but thanks for the suggestion. So, should I just order this kit (thanks Ben) and then shop around for someone to fit it? https://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/nissan-370z-350z-hr-07-stage-1-competition-clutch-kit-with-tarmac-sportz-lightweight-flywheel-heavy-duty-csc.html
Ben350
It's exactly what I've got on my car, I had to get towed by the AA to my local garage who sorted it all. Note that the kit includes a lightweight flywheel as opposed to the normal stock duel mass one so, in short, the car will rev and pick up quicker, but you'll probably have to give it a few more revs to get going initially. A very common mod on these cars but obviously only get that kit if you want it, maybe do some research into them. You could just get the kit without the flywheel, which is quite a bit cheaper. I'll link that too just so you have the option. If you wanted, I'm sure any decent garage could sort the parts for you in case you don't want to order them yourself online. Girl Racer
Thanks, I've had a quick trot around t'internet and there seem to be plenty of comments both for-and-against a lightweight flywheel, quite a few comments about driving style needing to change, and a lot of comments that it's noisy at idle/low revs ("my car sounds like a diesel now") !! Looks like the kit without the flywheel is a good idea, 9 day delivery lead time though! I'll be suffering from withdrawal symptoms.......! So glad I found this forum today, you guys are super helpful :-)
Girl Racer
Hey guys, I'm back for more advice..... Spoke to Tarmac Sportz, they are saying I need to replace my flywheel as well even though I've only done 48k miles. Do I really need to do that? Flywheels should last more than 100k miles, shouldn't they?
ZMANALEX
If it was mine I would replace the flywheel when the box is out, but not necessarily with a SMF.
Eddie_r32
I removed my single mass flywheel last year and went back to a dual, it's more money for a dual but it's a better day to day experience
Girl Racer
Thanks guys. I've decided to get a DMF as well and get it all done in one go. While on Tarmac Sportz I've seen a tasty rear spoiler that takes my fancy. I've been thinking about modding for years but never gotten around to it. This might be the start of something very expensive........ 😰
