Under sealing

Recommended Posts

Anyone had their car rust treated? I live in the North East and looking to find a recommended dealer. Which is the best treatment Waxoyl, Dinitrol or other? Don’t know much about the various treatments available but Waxoyl seems to me better for box sections rather than under body protection.

Im willing to travel for a reliable and recommended dealer.

Thanks in anticipation👍

I've done some research on this topic. To put it simply:

  • Wayoxl is crap and a bit of an antique. Go with an approved Dinitrol provider.
  • Undersealing can make a problem worse especially if serious rust has already started to take hold. It'll be hidden but still be eating away at your car. Saying this, most approved Dinitrol specialists do their best to remove existing rust before lathering on the coating.

As said, there's a lot better than Waxoyl available these days.

If you're doing it yourself; prep well and thoroughly first. Bilt Hamber Dynax is difficult to beat and easy enough if you can get under the car.

If you're getting someone else to do it, find someone reputable that uses what you want rather than getting someone to use something completely new to them. But avoid Waxoyl.

Agree with all of the above. If you aren’t careful you will start a problem for the future rather than prevent one. I have chosen not to underseal my 51 year old Datsun. It’s in very good shape having lived in South Africa and although it feels like the tight think to do it isn’t always. The risk is you seal in rust if it’s not prepared right as the two previous posters have rightly pointed  out.

Thanks guy’s for your input.

I’d love to do this myself but can’t buy sufficiently high ramps (at a reasonable price) to give decent space to work. Hiring a garage ramp is also prohibitive and I can’t find anyone with an inspection pit, so your then faced finding a dealer you can trust. It’s a bugger!

Are there any other professionally provided treatments other than those mentioned?
There is a Dinitrol company in the North East so I’ll check their reviews (but how trustworthy are they).

As I say I’d love to get at it myself, that way you know how good a job you’ve made but given my garage is just wide enough to squeeze out the door and the street isn’t an option I’m going to have to take a chance on a dealer.

UNLESS SOMEONE KNOWS BETTER😂

Agree with the warnings above ^^^

I would be inclined to search out reputable outfits by looking at Classic/Historic car forums.  Hopefully someone on here might have a good suggestion, but whatever, taking time to ensure a quality job is done, for me, is critical.

This is something I had been researching this for a while as I have a import prelude I was going to have done, stay away from pure car management because I got the real alarm bells when talking to them and the work done doesn’t seem too impressive, like above it all depends on what you want and what products you’re happy for them to use,

I contacted buzzweld who are in Bristol, they do everything you specific and the quality of their work seems to be top notch, they do three levels of undersealing and they’ll break it down what each level requires, top package included drop down of rear axle and fuel tank, and stripping back to bare metal.
Sr auto centre are also a company to look int, they restore s chassis and gtrs to show room spec, and 365 performance- bloke is on the Facebook group and they do full underbody treatment down to bare metal aswell- just vet everything properly

I come from the North East and have briefly looked into this as am thinking of doing the same come winter time when the car in not in use. Autospray in Darlington do Dinitrol and there was a 4x4 place up past Newcastle somewhere but I can not remember their name. A quick Google search came up with both companies and the Dinitrol website.
Let me know how you get on.

I've had a number of cars done by a specialist (south east).  Waxoyl is rubbish.  Dinitrol and Bilt Hamber products are excellent.

There are plenty of splash it on and run merchants so you need to seek out a specialist.

I'd recommend looking at the off road forums such as Land Rover and Defender.  Their owners are often well into this sort of protection.

There's a guy in Hull I used and he charged £300 I think, it was for the underside and arches. Not 100% on the brand used though. Hope this helps👍🏼

I’ve been doing a little more searching and found “Stagshaw” (mainly Landrovers but do other cars as well)who are the main Dinitrol agents apparently. There based on Queensway South on TVTE. I’m calling in on Monday for a quote but the guy said a ballpark figure would be £400-£700 depending. By the way Thompson’s/Waxworks of Morpeth are out of the under sealing business. Rang Auto spray for ballpark cost but no contact yet.

PS..just made contact with Autospray Darlington. The guy I spoke to said he did mainly  Waxoyl but could do Dinitrol but was unsure of the Dinitrol costs. He gave a ballpark of £500 but was open to a discount if more cars involved.

Having talked to the two companies mentioned, I got better vibes from Stagshaw.

Stagshaw was the other company I was thinking of. I live near Darlington so that would probably be my preference but it is my sons car so would have to talk him into getting it done. I have mentioned it to him to get it done at the back end of the year once he has had his fun over summer.
where about in the region are you from? There does not appear to be many members in this neck of the woods.

Im in Newcastle. My W brace needs replacing as well so I’ll ask Stagshaw if they can do that while there on. The guy to contact is called Josh and at the moment they have a 6wk ish waiting list. I’ll let you know what his quote price is when I visit on Monday.

Cheers. It’s not that far to go if I wanted it going and like someone said being a 4x4 place they may have a little more expertise on rust protection. Let me know how you get on 👍

The guy’s name is Josh, nice guy. His ball park was £550. They keep the car for about a week while they fully steam clean (must be stem cleaned) the underside, then after drying time treat with a rust inhibitor, then apply the Dinitrol to the underside and box sections.

There were several Landrovers on their forecourt and a six week waiting list. Had a look at one on the ramps in process and it all looked good. I got a good feeling about him, his guys and the place and felt they’d make a good job. I’m booked in for beginning of August.

By the way they can replace the W brace and kidney joints if required, don’t have a price for that as yet.

Sounds like you have found a decent place. Let me know how you get on.

The W brace was replaced on my car just before it was purchased but not sure about the kidney brackets although it had just past its test.
it would be a good idea for you to replace them and then get a coating on them. 👍

  • 1 month later...

Been to Stagshaw this morning to firm up prices for the W brace, if I supply the parts he recons it’s will only be a couple of Hrs Labour at circa £80/hr so not bad. Now to find a decent price for the kidney joints and bolt set.

can anyone confirm that all that’s required for the W Barack job is

A W brace

2 kidney joints

 A bolt set ??

and if you know where to get a decent price for these I’d like to know if you don’t mind.

Thanks

Good luck . Pleased to see you are using Dinitrol as wax oil is a no no. Just make sure they deal with any rust as the risk is if they don’t they will seal it in and then you will have big problems. Personally I wouldn’t be doing it to a zed unless you are keeping it for the next twenty years. I would be spending the money on other areas of the car but your car your money. I haven’t even done it to my 52 year old 510.

I've done this myself and if you can get it up on axle stands high enough to change the exhaust, it's high enough to underseal the arches and chassis.

Thankfully mine had bare minimum rust and 5yrs on the protection is still great with lovely water behaviour. I would definitely recommend buying £80 worth of product and having a go yourself setting aside a couple days. I've used waxoyl and never given me a problem with good prep as any product is only as good as the prep. Granted better products have come out in the last decade, but that's not to say waxoyl hasn't changed their formula since release.

Nice job!
the problem with me is AGE. Im 75 and my getting under car days are long gone now. I can still do it but then suffer aches and pains for days after. Nope the money I’ve saved doing my own work over the years is now being spent in old age. 😂

How did you go with Stagshaw? I'm thinking of using them for my Toyota.
