He’s shooting for a figure that only a tiny fraction of pro level tuners ever reach, so you can understand why people don’t think it’s going to happen. I’ve put my money where my mouth is this time, so can’t say fairer than that. If he does do it then fair enough, but right now this is screaming attention-whoring at its finest. It’s like me saying I’m going to put an 800bhp TT LS3 in my little MX5: totally doable, but equally unlikely. "attention whoring"... Not on social media tick. Not known in car circles tick, doesnt attend many meets tick....Hes only doing Youtube to document it and for anyone remotely interested No ones seeking any attention or approval. Just a discussion and asking if anyone done it or got close to doing it... If you wanted to put an LS3 in an MX5 id be happy to see it as a car guy and offer encouragement where possible. ZP having spoken to someone who works in Renault-Nissan there could still be u-turn and importation is still possible on the downlow Thats the difference. Ekona
Attention-whoring existed long before social media I get he’s your brother, but surely from what you’ve said even you must have doubts? Hey if I’m wrong then charity wins, and if I’m right charity wins. Can’t be a bad result either way.
Ian
Has he ever done a build of this proportion before? Does he have a plan to follow? As someone who has done builds like this, its draining. Its draining financially, drains on relationships and is a drain on you emotionally and mentally. I lost some good friends because of my build & almost lost my future wife. They take over your life. My build was at around 35k when I pulled the plug, and I still had probably another 15k left to spend. Its the little things that you forget about that catch you out, things like gaskets, fluids, hoses & fittings etc, I spent hundreds on AN fittings and hoses that you forget to take into account when planning the build out. IMO, given that your brother has by your own admission, very little money along with no social media or online presence but suddenly wants to YouTube everything, He's probably seen the big YouTube builds which are sponsored to death because they are established brands and he thinks that by doing this he can get on the bandwagon & get most of his car built for him by sponsors. I really hope I'm wrong and if he does YouTube it, I will be a subscriber and watch every video but I just can't see it happening.
msitpro
A lot of sense spoken Ian I'm at similar money now on my Z, and if my relationship was at a more advanced stage then I think it would have been in danger during my recent respray part of the project. Prices on hoses/fittings is mental isn't it... Although cheaper fittings than AN style/braided ones would do the job more than adequately I am sure, for a fraction of the cost? stanski
Blimey its getting busy this thread? I have to admit I was considering doing a (just for fun) Youtube channel but covering my classic car service bits and bobs - nothing too clever, some nice background music and basic honest advice. Lets face it all the old petrol tech is going eventually and the people with the skills to fix it, so its a good way to pass that on? But I realised the sheer amount of time you need on top of the editing later so thought naaa I don't have that much free time? If he wants to do it cool let him , personally I was happy with my first car, a 1971 VW Beetle 1200cc 42hp I think? I used to just leave my heel on the accelerator pedal on motorways and it found its own speed. Just as much fun as my 5 litre V8 Mustang. (1987 that photo - yes you are allowed to laugh now!) GranTurismoEra
All good when 2030 swings around itll be getting late as you say and modding will only get more expensive. So its now or never. Im sure hes got his own plan for the car. I dont know all the details. Hes done his own research on the car and on forums. I only opened the thread to ask if anyone else had done something similar. Like I said it will take a considerable amount of time and money. Hes going down the specialist route so it will be in stages with each stage requiring hardware and work to be done. The biggest stumbling blocks are the Turbo, ECU, possible gearbox purchases with labour as well as Engine builds if he chooses to add race cams, change internals etc. Its safer to do as people have blown their engines. If it was self built its easy to forget things. There are many specialists in the country that can build the car. He hasn't said who hes going with. Obviously Ive told him its not realistic and how much hes looking at to achieve 700-800hp let alone 1000hp. Its what he wants. So when its all set and done yes big money which could be better invested in big pharma, Tesla stocks over the 5 years but this is his thing. Yep I remember 'Herbie goes bananas' and the remake. You never took a shine to the modern Beetles then? Edited January 15, 2021 by GranTurismoEra

You never took a shine to the modern Beetles then? @zedmanalex can advise, his 350z convertible had 650+bhp from what I remember, complete with flames out the back, I know because I was behind him!! As a lifelong air-cooled fan, I waited with bated breath when the new Beetle was announced, but VW like Land Rover and everyone else wanting to make a profit. Instead of basing it on a Polo being an affordable peoples car, they went upmarket and chose the Golf platform instead charging a lot more money. Ironically when Lucy had our daughter she did buy a new Beetle (2004 model) convertible and it was a cool car actually. It just worked and because most of it was plastic remained like new. She only sold it to get a Caymen S, with subsequent regrets ever since.

Very Depeche mode. Wish I was that skinny now. I still have most of that car in parts (after it was written off by a Sierra)
Ian
1000hp will need a forged engine. 2J’s are bullet proof but only up to around 800
