Nissan Mill Hill Service

They want £435 for a 30,000 mile service. Seems a bit steep. Maybe these are London prices. Service while you wait

 

I can only think Spark plugs and gearbox oil may be changed or I may end up paying less if those dont need doing. Couldn't get through to London West RRG...Phone lines are crap.

 

Any ideas? As theyre the only HPCs i can see around here

Some second hand buyers see it as additional value. I'm a big believer in local Indies and specialists, with strong reputations, but if you have mint motor with the FMDSH it can command more money than others - regardless of how much sense that makes.

True it may command more money with some buyers, but I'd argue that having a full independent specialist service history would command just as much from other (more informed) buyers. 

 

Plus you have peace of mind during your ownership that you're getting an honest, professional service apposed to a rushed job and people trying to overcharge you for parts/services that you don't necessarily need.

Whilst I do take your point, would you walk away from a car with FMDSH because it didn't have indie history?

If there were 2 cars for sale, identical except the service history- one from a main dealer and one from a reputable independent specialist, then yes I would.

I'm with you on this jack would never give my car to Nissan for service....i usally do

 all my own service on my all my jap cars iv'e owned or get my local garage to do it  who 

i can trust.

Why use a HPC? Surely any Nissan garage can service it, it’s nothing special mechanically speaking, plus it keeps the main dealer history intact. 
 

Not that I think it’ll be much if any cheaper, but it’s an option.

My zed has been serviced by the same family owned independent garage for the past 13 years.

Admittedly it's just a 350z not a Nismo 370z, but apart from replacement

of a faulty ABS clock spring, all I've needed is regular servicing, spark plugs, brakes, suspension, fluids etc

 

I even get a courtesy car:lol:

But that's not the same. Some buyers would walk away from one car if it didn't have FMDSH, regardless if they were presented with another choice.

 

If you would genuinely walk away from one because it had it, then I think I'm fairly confident saying it puts you in a very small % of the second hand buyers out there, compared to the person above.

I have had a fair few marques of car and every time I join an owners group I hear the same comments about 'these cars need experts to look after them' which to a degree is right, in that every car has its little quirks that you only really know about if you look at them regularly - but do bear in mind we are talking about a service here, its about the most basic bit of mechanicking that can be done on a car. 

 

Don't get me wrong, I hear muppets that dont put spark plugs back in, wrong oil and all that but to think that a service history from X means a better car than service history of Y doesn't make sense in my mind, its a money spinner really as its bread and butter work thats done with over priced parts in many cases.

I agree with your point @coldel that servicing is very basic work that any half competent mechanic should be able to do without problems, but the bonus driven pay-scale of main dealerships means they're always rushing so are more likely to make mistakes or miss things.

 

Also sure you might only take your car in for a service, but this could end up highlighting additional (not so straight-forward) work that needs doing, personally I'd rather be somewhere where I can trust them to do whatever needs doing no matter the complexity. 

 

I'm not saying that a car with a FMDSH wouldn't be as good a car, I just think if you can get a better service for a cheaper price why wouldn't you.

And the smaller garages are desperate for money right now so are equally as likely to rush things, plus they can employ people who have zero qualifications to do the menial tasks like, y’know, basic servicing ;)

 

Works both ways. Find a garage you can trust, main or indy, that’s the most important thing. I love finding decent backstreet garages near me, to give an option from main dealer or expensive specialists. Choice is good!

Plenty of reputable indies in one persons eyes are rip off merchants in another’s. 
 

Servicing is basic and in fact something anyone that can turn a spanner should be able to do themselves, if you want the car properly looked at that’s another discussion altogether

Lol I hear you but you need to remember not all buyers are that way inclined. A lot of buyers come from other manufacturers like the Germans and prefer full dealer history.

 

Whereas people who have been on the mod scene are very versed with Specialist garages and independents. The average joe on the street would assume non dealer history is your mate doing DIY on the car. Some may think yes its serviced but hasn't undergone a 70 point checklist as standard. Things may have been missed.

 

While a specialist could tell you why you have serious brake judder but a manufacturer may need to hire a specialist disc skimmer. There are pros and cons....I know Abbey. Id take an older 370 or 350 to them. Ive been there recently for brakes as I needed uprated pads and better discs than standard. Also had that judder issue and my calipers needed repainting. Left the painting for now though. So indies have their pros and cons 

 

Not slating them at all as service was top and hes a knowledgeable guy...been in the game decades...id definitely take my car to get work done from a specialist.....but there are pros and cons anywhere you go. The cars only 4 years old with 4 services so far.

 

If youre never selling or giving the car to a fellow enthusiast then indies or diy all the way.

I have a local indie that services my CRZ and AA Approved and all the good certs....Ive taken my Nissan to him for interim oil changes £20 labour and sometimes hes like just pay for the oil+ filter... sometimes i get a discount from him....using only Nissan approved OEM items...i could do it myself but i prefer a qualified person with a ramp lol.

Now Glyn Hopkins no longer RRG....£475 and an extra £200 for Sparks

 

My local wants £500 including Sparks. Auto Trans service would be around £400. Due to 9.2 Litres and full day work I reckon. £500 is for major service incl 6 Sparks, cabin filters, oil, oil filter, x2 air filter, coolant should be part of that? I doubt brake fluid is included probably extra. Ill check regarding that.  Ill probably go with the local. If he can wrap all this for £500...He,ll probably want another £75 for brake fluid. Ill do that when doing the full brake change. Makes sense 

 

Gearbox Service We dont know if theyll do the customary drain fill drain fill. Theres a specific process for gearbox servicing. Ill leave that till late next year and Diff at 60-70k

 

Coolant should be included as part of major service?

I had a look on their site on what the p3 includes. Ill discuss with the garage. Should be okay. At least its getting done. Ill leave the diff this time. Funny enough i think Mill Hill did the coolant last time. So just need to check with whoever does this service 

 

Diff and Gearbox on the Auto is £500 on its own. Can leave that till next time. Its not urgent.
