Minid
Yes, wouldn't give it long, if people flood into the capital with scaled down public transport which the gov said we shouldn't be using anyway.
davey_83
How else do folks get to work in the capital?....... Im sure those that can drive have done do, requiring parking once at work *rare. Ride, providing the distance is reasonable again with safe storage during the day. Walk, of course again if the distance is reasonable. Taxi option, will get expensive as the days/weeks go on. I understand bashing the problem, however not when the solution isnt forthcoming.
ilogikal1
A considerable number of people in London rely on public transport because owning a car isn't particularly practical or, in many cases, not even possible. Many won't own a bike either because in normal life it's equally as impractical to cycle in central London unless you enjoy being intimately acquainted with the underside of a bus. There are of course exceptions to both, but when a significantly large number of people are urged to go back to work, with absolutely no thought or guidance around the logistics of such, what are the options? Don't go to work and probably get sacked? Granted, certain people have been morons in the current situation, however in this instance blaming the commuters seems as rash and ill conceived as the instruction to return to work. Stutopia
The solution is clear for anyone to see. You shouldn’t be going out now, unless it concerns you and your family’s survival. The fact that the “right thing” contradicts the advice, is potentially criminal. Though being able to demonstrate you caught it at/because of work, might be legal barrier that’s difficult to clear. I’m lucky enough to not have to go in the office, but for anyone who is compelled to be in work in the next months, to pay the bills or to keep vital services running. It’s a travesty that non-essential workers are being added into the mix and increasing their risk of exposure.
coldel
Its a mixed morning day so far - the press will of course sensationalise any photo they see and present it as typical when its not, if you go on twitter and see what other parts of the public transport system look like it is very empty. Went for a cycle this morning and definitely more cars on the road, pavements are still pretty clear and shopping in the supermarket hasn't changed. But yes, the government has said those that should be working, should be working. The communication style and content as like the rest of this situation, has been an absolute farce. Still the time for an inquiry into the whole thing and learning the lessons around the mistakes that they have made is for another day. Right now we need to work out the best way to balance a nationalised workforce that has to be paid for by everyone working and earning money. God know what our tax is going to look like for the coming years, I dread to think.

coldel
Given the Tories yipping and cheering in parliament when they voted down a public sector pay rise (including our beloved NHS who everyone is in love with again) a couple of years ago I cannot see the current government doing anything other than a freeze, until the next election comes around and they re-recruit the police they let go and pay the NHS a salary each year that doesn't decrease in real world terms because of inflation

The tories voted down a blanket public services pay rise, so everyone who works for councils, NHS etc, does every council worker you meet deserve a pay rise, no they don't. Not long after this the tories gave the nurses a 10% pay rise

That said, there was no need to cheer and yip at the result, some decorum would have been more appropriate given the subject matter As for the 10% that's not true, here is the agreement https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/news/nhs-pay-deal-for-england-accepted which shows a 3% minimum pay rise in year one with two subsequent rises over the following two years up to a minimum of 6.5% - some nurses would have got to 10% pay rise over three years some not but ultimately the pay rise was around 2-3% each year. The G Man
Just been watching the complete covidiots that have been travelling 50+ miles to, essentially, go for a walk and, “feed the ducks”. Without cognisance to where they are going to sh1t or p1ss, as most, if not all, public conveniences are closed, unable to wash their hands, without face coverings and with little thought to the communities where they are going. Ignorant bastarts at best, culpable knuts at worse. Stay local ffs, don’t be a f’kin drain on resources, at best, or a spreader at the other end of the scale. The level of selfishness is jaw dropping. Edited May 16, 2020 by The G Man
