coldel
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51236375 The result of rolling out a trial without replicating the inherent key elements of the trial i.e. lack of refuge points at regular intervals. Whoever is presiding over this debacle of not only wasting lives but wasting money needs stringing up, I guess we find out today who is responsible. Andy_Muxlow
I do think that smart motorways would work better if people used them correctly though. If people obeyed the signs earlier there wouldn't be so much carnage. But alas people nowadays think its ok to disregard road signs in order to jump the potential queues... coldel
Unfortunately absolutely nothing in the world is followed perfectly by the general public, we are not creatures that are programmed that way. The near miss count is insane, up from a handful to thousands. The Issue is that the trial was not replicated and the learnings from it ignored. Utter stupidity and contemptuous. Umster
Mehhh too many NIMBYs are going to stop the government from making more roads. Think we need some better ideas on how to drive from one town to the other, even if it means upsetting a few people and slapping new roads down. Typical UK problem, we tried to please too many people and just upgrade "old" infrastructure to become modern. SMART motorways definitely weren't worth the hassle and it's unfortunate that so many people have died, been hurt or had near misses.
Ekona
But then I would argue how on Earth so many people have accidents on what are essentially the straightest roads in the country. No matter how smart the road, there will always be a better idiot. 1
coldel
Well given that the change in the road style has resulted in tens of more deaths and thousands more near misses you have to consider that the idea might be at fault when the rest of the motorway which isn't smart is so much more safer. Of course, you shouldnt drive through red X's but human nature is by design not set for huge rule following, it's to be frank, completely idiotic to think so and those responsible for omitting the obvious i.e. safety refuge from the roll out should be up for criminal charges or being sent back to school to learn about what trials and tests are there for. Stutopia
Guys, why can't everyone just ride their unicycle to the craft coffee shop they work in? It's only half a mile guys.
HEADPHONES
Literally JUST watched a Panorama documentary on this. Horrific video footage of cars broken down on live motorways with no hard shoulder to escape to. Just sitting ducks with an average wait time of 37 minutes before help arrives. Dashcam footage showing the car Infront swerving at the last minute avoiding a stationary car ahead leaving the camera car literally a millisecond to follow suit as the stationary car appears in view like a brick wall. Just pure luck the cars didn't sideswipe the middle lane cars as they swerved. Another fatality was on a flyover with no embankment to escape to. Just sat like sitting ducks. 42 seconds later they were hit from behind killing the poor kid sitting in the back. Very very sad
coldel
Yes utterly appalling and people should be properly in the sh1t for such poor decision making that is life and death.

Don’t work like that. Someone does the maths that says, “we’ve saved X millions on this. Only Y numbers of deaths. That means each life cost Z, which is ‘acceptable’ “ The irony is that speed cameras are justified as necessary because they are saving lives and not as a revenue stream. So lives are worth saving, so long as the mechanism involved brings in money, not expends it.
snowy87
You will see how dangerous Smart motorways are when thick fog is around. There will be carnage

Yes but you have a duty of care for road users, if it was all money saving they wouldn't even turn the lights on or resurface the roads - that negligence leading to unnecessary death. Refuge areas are a blatant obvious requirement, omitted by stupid people!
