GranTurismoEra
https://jalopnik.com/nissan-might-have-played-itself-1835060715 As Renault move to start a merger where will Nissan be in all of this. It would diminish their role in an already unequal partnership that Renault dominates. Apparently Nissan arent interested in mergers for the sake of volume sales. That probably explains their painfully slow product refresh. Not sure what their strategy is. If this deal goes ahead it would be Fiat Chrysler Renault Nissan Mitsubishi and various sub companies all in a group with Daimler as a partner. Apparently Nissan has less shares in Renault than Renault have in Nissan. Also where does that leave Daimler Nissan alliance after the arrest of Carlos Ghosn. Many projects have been put on hold. Although projects like Mercedes X class and use of Nissan engines in some Mercedes have already been completed. Shared designs of Infiniti and Mercedes models in the last few years. It might be time for Nissan to move in a different direction. The high cost of electrification and stiff competition is probably whats keeping Nissan in this Renault alliance. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-daimler-boss-could-end-renault-nissan-partnership Edited June 6, 2019 by GranTurismoEra

ATTAK Z
It seems everyone is looking for partners as we move towards electrification and to milk the Chinese market

stanski
I think Nissan has lost its way a bit in recent years? Yes they have flagship cars like the GT-R but its the bread and butter mass market stuff that makes them the money especially Cashcows for the SUV market and Micras in countries like India and the Middle eastern countries. Oh Navaras too. Ironically I think Infiniti have made the biggest c#ck ups! They have been in the States and Aus for decades then swung into Europe and UK. Absolutely zero advertising in UK, with old designs ,damn good cars btw with the right ideas about forward thinking tech and great interiors but petrol based guzzlers. So they get into bed with Mercedes and start building their Q30 SUV thing with diesel engines looks almost identical to the Merc equivalent, then we get Dieselgate and suddenly Diesel is evil, so they are left with a diesel engined product range and now they finally realised it was a bad idea moving into Europe and are leaving again. Bad timing I know but I still have never seen an advert for them. What kind of business model is that? As much as I am not keen on French cars at least we got the VQ engine off them, japanesed of course so its reliable but still a good unit. There will be a shift in the market again, big companies merging others falling by the wayside, then smaller specialist ones coming along with the leccie stuff as that becomes more unified, so they just create unique bodywork or retro fit into classics (that would be my thing) but hey I just bought a gas guzzling V8 so how clever am I!
StevoD
Was the VQ actaully French or is that Clarkson talk I'm sure Nissan had been using the VQ long before Renault
coldel
As far as I know it was Clarkson's usual inaccurate facts about cars - VQ range was first designed by Nissan in 1994 and has been tinkered with and placed in many cars since.
davey_83
The VQ series was a Nissan designed and built engine, Renault used these as a customer, not the other way round.
stanski
Well there you go! Never listen to myths online. No wonder its a good engine the right people designed it! Its like my mates mk1 Toyota MR2 , yamaha built the engine , so well made even now when his car has been parked up for years, it still starts first time and sounds sweet! coldel
Yes the Toyota engines often have Yamaha written on bits like cam belt covers etc if you look closely enough!
