My new install - pic heavy!

As a lot of you may know, I love my sounds, and after changing from my last sound off competition car I needed the sounds!

My last install developed over time to be one big show piece, used hideous amounts of alcantara and didn't leave me too much of a practical car!

This time, I wanted something that sounded amazing, and still allowed me to use the car for cross continent jaunts. But me being difficult, I also still wanted my JL W7 sub and whatever power is needed to run the system.

So the equipment list:-

Alpine CDA-9887R - http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/ind ... =cda-9887r

Alpine 6 disc multichanger - http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/ind ... dvdchanger

JL Audio C5 6.5" component speakers - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_comp ... age_id=233

JL Audio 10W7 - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs ... ?page_id=3

JL Audio 300/2 amplifier for front speakers - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=436

JL Audio 500/1 amplifier for the sub - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=439

Caliber competition 2 channel amp to run the rear fill speakers

Alpine iPod control unit

Alpine Bluetooth control unit

Steering wheel control unit

American Industries fascia adaptor

Several packs of Dynamat Xtreme

JL Audio power supply - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_conn ... p?cat_id=3

JL Audio interconnects - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_conn ... p?cat_id=1

And lots of fibreglass!

Initially the centre bar with the rear speakers in it was going to be attacked but with the size of the sub and volume of box it needed, this wasn't going to happen. So then it needed some clever thinking from The Sound Gallery to work out how to install it all and still have some boot use...... :headhurt:

So first steps, rip everything out of the car..... (all pics will follow!)

So are you looking to retain use of the whole boot?

here is a supprising amount of room in the stock location - I had forgotten how big an area is back there. I would be really interested to know what the volume of the stock location is. It looks like a good 1.5 maybe even 2 cu.ft

I'm trying to work out how to get an old Orion H2 sub into the space as I really loved my old one but like the W7 its a chunky munkey

All will become clear... ;)

When I can sort the darn photos!

But I will say there was no way the standard location was being used - too many holes and any box that fit in there would be too small.... :)

Will take a look at Imageshack, cheers Gixxer.

Looks and sounds fantastic bud. Did you get the sub back up and running.

PM sent ;)

Yep, it was an error on fusing. All sorted now.

Cheers for the offer, but I need to explain what a lot of the pics are!

As I as saying..... :teeth::blush:

First thing was to take the interior of the car out.

DSCF1432.jpg

Prepare the car for work.....

DSCF1434.jpg

Cable needs to be routed.....

DSCF1437.jpg

DSCF1443.jpg

And start the Dynamat work on the doors....

DSCF1436.jpg

With the Dynamat result for the doors looking like this.....

With that done, the attention is turned to the sub. Originally it was going to sit between the seats. Without going mental on the fibreglass and trimming and needing to spend a few £k on extra work for the rest of the install, it was contemplated and discussed and the idea was launched.....

Fibreglass matting to take shape...

DSCF1433.jpg

DSCF1438.jpg

And some shaping of the existing polystyrene block starts being done....

DSCF1440.jpg

DSCF1441.jpg

At the same time, the mounting rings are made up so the sub can be mounted in an inverted position....

DSCF1448.jpg

DSCF1449.jpg

DSCF1450.jpg

And so the box starts to take shape...

DSCF1447.jpg

DSCF1452.jpg

And built up and left to cure and shape in the car over....

DSCF1453.jpg

And over again....

DSCF1454.jpg

With the filler helping shape it perfectly to the space, the sub was test mounted....

So, while that is going off, what about the cabling. An amp rack was built to accommodate those listed above.... This also shows the IXOS fuse holder in place.

DSCF1446.jpg

And then it gets the capacitor added to it, and the Caliber amp....

DSCF1451.jpg

And it fits quite nicely.....

DSCF1461.jpg

......behind the drivers seat! :teeth:

Meanwhile the sub box has cured and gets carpeted and fitted....

DSCF1458.jpg

Up front, the BOSE was ditched, and the American Industries fascia fitted and the Alpine headunit. Full iPod control, bluetooth phone and the steering wheel controls still work.....

DSCF1466.jpg

And there's a sub tucked away in the boot.....

Unfortunately, the best bit I cannot get over in the pictures, is the SOUND. Even though the speakers are still running in, and I expect the midbass to open up a bit, I cannot believe how good it sounds. Ben and the guys at the Sound Gallery set it up with the Imprint and Audessy software, and I have tweaked it a tad, and I am blown away by the sound in such early days. I spent three years setting up my last car and it was not quite as good as this. Whatever your music taste, stick the CD in and it sounds amazing. And it will hit 138db if it needs to!

Hope you like. :)

Looking really nice - I'm swaying towards a similar type install funny enough - was chatting to a mate about it last night about how to retain the wheel. The annoying thing is even you loose the spare room most deep subs still won't fit so it would poke up in the middle which is just a pain.

Really like the little amp rack - I might have to copy that :D credit will be given lol

Cheers Beavis, the guys there helped me get my last car to trophy winning positions and they have a former European champion on their staff - the judging includes wiring integrity.... :headhurt:

3FIDDYZ, if you will leave your iPod in my car, what can I do!? :p;)

I haven't put it up on my350z no, I may do!

Rob, JL came across to take a look at the install. They know about it, and are interested in the box as far as I know.

If people do want to contact the Sound Gallery, they will do you a top job, and will make sure you go away happy. You will get cheaper quotes, but IMO you won't get a better value one. 01494 464670. :)
