RoadHog
Hi all Im new so please forgive me if i posted this in the wrong place, i have also searched through some old oil pressure threads but cant find anything that matches my 350z's symptoms This new years eve, i drove down the motorway for 40 mins to work absolutely fine. Finished work at 14:30 and started the car and immediatly i knew something was up as the car sounded alot louder than normal and very throaty and hollow, i drove it out the car park and it sounded like a tractor but didnt feel massively lumpy. My thoughts are its a misfire but it is still pretty smooth and i havent ever expierienced a misfire on a V engine so im not sure how prominent that would feel, if you really concentrate you can feel a judder but to anyone not familiar with a 350z, evidently (as below) you cant tell It was idling/ high revs at 1250 and oil pressure sitting at about 45 where as it ALWAYS has sat at 30 unless accelerating it would go to 90 buyt neevr any higher. So thats a worry. Checked oil levels, fine. It was overdue a service though. Each time the AA or RAC guys (i had both out) started my car the oil pressure seemed to get higher and higher until on 02/01 when i started it after 2 days to drive on to a flatbed to be taken to a garage the oil pressure was idling at 90 and it sounded even louder and throtier and still idling high. The thing that is annoying me, is the recovery mechanics and the guy that has it at his garage now all think its fine and sounds fine, but no offence to them, they dont know what it sounds like normally. It sounds nice compared to a normal car but compared to a healthy 350 it sounds like a tractor and very hollow :( The AA and RAC couldnt find anything wrong as there are no fault codes showing they cant find anything wrong with it or see any live data so i have had it recovered to a garage where it is now. The mechanic as i said above couldnt work out what is wrong with it and said he took it for a drive and the oil pressure is high but it seems fine (but its not) so i asked him to do an oil and filter change as it was overdue, which he has done and when he put it on the ramps he noticed the passenger side flexipipe was completely cracked, so i have had a plate welded in by a customs garage now in hope that could have been the culprit but the guy has just called me to say its all done but oil pressure still idling at 60 so im lost now Please if anyone could shed some light on it i would greatly appreciate it . Im heading over there on weds evening to go and drive it to see what i think of it but im not confident its going to be running any better Huge thanks in advance to anyone that replies
RobPhoboS
Where are you based ? (as we'd rather point you towards your nearest Z specialist). What year/version is your Z ? I don't know what is causing it exactly but you can do this... Go to google and search like this: site:350z-uk.com high oil pressure site:my350z.com high oil pressure (US forum) Just write the search term after the website, you'll get far better results than a forum search itself. Irn Bru
Pretty sure the Zed oil pressure gauges are a bit rank tbh. Might be worth having a word with the Zed guru @ZMANALEX though, what he doesn't know about zeds ain't worth knowing
ZMANALEX
First thing to do is to run an oil pressure test using a mechanical gauge directly off the engine. It will more than likely be the oil pressure sender or the gauge that is faulty, both of which I have in stock.

Hi Zman, thank you for repsonding. i will ask my mechanic to do that, though you'd hope he would have done that himself... If it is the sender or gauge that woudlnt explain why it isnt running properly and sounding terrible though would it? :/
Keyser
I've got to go with an exhaust issue for the sound, my first thought was that the gasket has gone and possibly melted a wire to the oil sender. However I'd be surprised if the RAC/AA did not notice a blown gasket, it's possible a CAT or a silencer box has failed especially on after-market parts so that would be worth checking as this is the most likely cause of a noise change especially the "sounds like a tractor" bit. Zeds will have higher oil pressure when cold and noticeably lower when hot so it may be you are immediately checking the oil pressure when cold, it should drop back when the engine warms. The pressure sensors do fail and are not the best when working, as ZmanAlex has said to be sure it needs a mechanical gauge put on to test and monitor as it warms. Hope that helps.
