Now @Beb thought he would sneak away in my 370z but while he was distracted with the boost I whipped his Zed into the "undecided new name" Shed II

 

 

and took it apart

 

 

That will teach him 

 

Why, you may ask, would I do such a thing? Well as you know I was trying to recreate this -

 

 

and I had got to here

 

 

However all the measurements had to be projected, that is to say as I had no solid datum point and the shape is quite complex. I had to take any two points create a straight line from those then take a measurement from that line to work out where the top shock mount and upper control arms should be located.

I am worried that these are not accurate enough and given the lack of adjustment on the front of a Zed I am worried that the alignment  can not be adjusted enough to be spot on.

 

This is the very start and if the chassis or suspension is not spot on the finished car will never drive true.

I will no doubt add adjustable parts where available to allow some ability to dial in the tracking but I really want it to be as close to OEM when I start as possible.

 

My solution after getting my hands on a still together Zed -

 

Make these -

 

 

find out they don't work so change them into this -

 

 

Then using my new toy tool

 

 

I cut some 50mm blocks and bolted it all into the Zed

 

 

repeat on the other side and then weld up a frame to hold everything in place, The frame is mounted to the cross member so it will always sit in line with the chassis rails.

I ended up with a nice template

 

 

 

 

The theory is I can now bolt it to my cross member attach the chassis rails then build the mounts in exactly the right place

In other news, I decided I needed some new toys in the "undecided new name" Shed II 

BUT I have no space and the "machine room" is a mess after stripping a Zed, Mrs K painting a dressing table she didn't like (then deciding after painting it she still didn't like it ) and the arrival of a large amount of steel sheeting there is no space  

 

 

The big pile of boxes is new tools - so I'm going to have a tidy up and a rearrange to get everything in!

This is probably not that interesting but it's another reason for slow progress on the PopZ build, well that buying new cars, selling cars and actually having a life outside of the garage. (OK the last part may not be true I don't really have a life outside the garage )

Thanks mate - I can't take all the credit I stole the idea from someone else after I decided my build had to many possibilities for alignment problems.

Right you lot, far to much sitting around going on - Time to bore you with what I've been up to which has at least a tenuous link to the Pop-Z build

 

As I said previously I wanted some new Toys for the build but had to clear some space - I did that and had a good tidy up

 

I was going to throw an old table out to make space but the long suffering Mrs K suggested I put wheels on it and use it like my welding table - what a good idea

During the war they sent a couple of Mirage Jet fighters to be sure I was safe

 

 

 

Don't mention the war!!!!

 

 

Onto my next project -

 

First new toy is a bead roller

 

 

all assembled - I didn't read the instructions as it didn't have any  

 

 

Now you may think sorted - but no I didn't stop there, I've been doing my research and I saw one on Project Binky (the same one) that he had put a windscreen wiper motor on with a foot pedal as really it takes 2 people to use it otherwise.

But I thought I'd be a smart ar$e  and use a starter motor for the extra power

 

I took a piece of pipe and lathed it

 

 

Cut 2 thin lengths from a larger bit of pipe

 

 

to make a small pulley

 

 

Front pulley from a 350z DE engine

 

 

on the lathe

 

 

then add an adapter to fit onto the bead roller

 

 

The I tested it   Epic fail even with that much reduction in the gearing it runs at ludicrous speeds!!   it was funny  though

 

So I added that to my list of fails and popped down to my favourite scrap yard

Ok lets go with the flow and use what others have - search YouTube people have used various things from drills to garage door openers to do this but wiper motors seem a good option and I got it for free.

 

350 idler pulley

 

 

plate welded on

 

 

machined for clearance

 

 

made another adapter

 

 

and mated it with a 350z power steering pump pulley, tested that and speed seems better, but before I fitted it together I wanted to address another issue I had read about, these cheap bead rollers (compared to £1 to £3k for a pro one!!) can flex which causes an uneven bead, I could flex mine with my thumb!

Also when I tightened all the bolts it was hard to turn, This is due to alignment,

Few solutions, angle iron or 1" box section welded to the back - I didn't have any 1" box and I do like to overdo things so..................

 

Cleaned the paint off

Then I made a frame and put the motor on

 

 

The 2 bolts both align it. stop it twisting and allow me to tension the belt (from a 350 of course)

Just had a thought. How are you going to approach the new Individual Vehicle Approval scheme stuff as from what I was reading they are getting quite strict on things now. You cant just use the donors cars v5 etc.

I'm looking into it - not really a top priority at the moment as it will take years to build this and they will no doubt change the rules on a daily basis while I do it

Probably end up with a Q plate if I play by the new rules, which is the only thing that annoys me - they work on the points rule now so it depends what parts are original.

We shall see

I know there has been a lack of updates but I just got a GT-R - what did you expect???

The bead roller wiring is currently on hold as when I tested it even on low speed it feeds the metal quite quickly so I thought I'd add a speed controller to the motor to make it a bit more user friendly.

Now I could make one but I found them so cheap on the bay it isn't worth it so I found a genuine UK seller with UK stock ready to ship

Surprisingly the shipment from UK stock hasn't actually arrived yet   O who cares at that price I can wait

 

To keep from getting bored I cleaned the Shed II out again and changed a gearbox on a 350z for a forum member that made the pilgrimage down  

 

Then I set about modifying my new band saw;

 

 

I am happy with it's performance so far but,

 

the wheels are crap and moving it is not easy, it is also an upright saw however if you look here -

 

 

You will notice the that in the upright position the saw bed sits at gonad height

It's uncomfortable to work at that height and a little worrying!

 

The legs also wobble - I did buy the  cheap version the more expensive one came with a better stand. This one is just pressed steel that fits where it touches

 

Anyway I took it apart

 

and lined the legs up to the corners

 

 

 

Added a few holes for spot welds

 

 

I had this old stand on the scrap pile

 

 

Cleaned up some bits from that

 

 

welded them on

 

 

added a base and wheels

 

 

It's now easy to move and sits at a good height in the upright position
