Keyser
Sunday then, First job get the gearbox mount sorted As I said before this engine was being fitted into a BMW but the conversion was never finished, It did come with their gearbox mount though. Not a straight bolt in job, but it is going to be strong as they have used something like 8mm plate steel - I'm not wanting to re-invent the wheel and this is already here so ...... Made some HEAVY brackets to bolt to the original points on the 350 I don't mind them being that bit over what is needed as apart from weight there is no real downside and they have a strong leverage effect on them from being forwards of the load point. Bit of welding to connect them together Ended up with this Which fits like so Gearstick alignment Well it's in the middle but I need to make it a bit longer - Add that to the list Happy with the height I went for, now all the mounts are in the engine sits here That's about identical to the 350 gear box position So that's it LS engine in a 350Z, no kit and a weekends work, scientific alignment done with - 1 x Tape measure 1x Steel rule 1x Mk 1 one eyeball 1x Best Guess Of course I have no idea if the radiator will fit back on but if not I will just move it Keyser
MDMetal
Nifty, I assume that's a rubber block on the gearbox mount to soften the vibrations?
P15UL T
Looking forward to seeing how you get on. I’ll be starting my LS3 build in the new year so I’m happy to learn by your mistakes Paul

Keyser
Moving swiftly on to Sunday afternoon, The Sump This is the gap I was left with after getting the engine to what looked about right. This is the LS sump No chance of getting that in as is! I did however get the BMW fitment sump Which also won't fit First thing I noticed while looking for a solution and the modification of the sump was this - Yup they are warped, now I don't know if bolting this in will pull that out if not I may get it skimmed to make it flat again. After much thought I just gave up and cut the sump up WHat I did with that in a mo Keyser

Yes, most engines/gearboxes have a rubber mount to reduce vibration, this is the standard one from the Monaro, it may need replacing with something harder but won't know until we drive it

Keyser
Oi Oi - I have this annoying thing called work that slows me down OK so a trim up on the mill Couple of spot welds we have Test fit that - more depth available but it is to close to the cross member So they need modifying - I also had to remove this much of the sump I am worried about actual capacity after I get it finished, but I will build it and see how much it holds then see if I need to extend it further forwards to hold more oil. Extensions added Another test fit Height is right cross member clearance is good Had this sheet of aluminium in the pile it's as thick as the part I'm modifying but I'll most likely double skin the bottom against bumps New sides added New base bent to shape and tacked in place. By the end of Sunday i was here - Still not sure it will hold enough oil but that's all the space I have without going wider or further forwards Hmmm. For info it would have been just as easy if not easier to simply start again with the sump but I at least got to use the drain plug and can reuse the splash tray. Hope to weld a bit more tonight, time permitting as @andybp says these little jobs do take a long while especially if you have nothing to work from, it takes longer to measure, test fit, modify and retest than to actually weld it all up So maybe more soon Keyser Maximum Effort

Ebized
Just love your ingenuity. Is there much weight difference between the OEM 350 engine/box and the Monaro pairing? Maybe a baffle plate in the sump to help keep oil around the pick-up, especially if you tracking it? Is a dry sump set-up out of the question?

Is a dry sump set-up out of the question? Thanks No surprisingly not, I don't have the figures but the 350 lump is heavy for a V6 and the box is huge! I'm sure someone will have the figures or look them up but as I recall when we did @Wasso LS it was not a lot. Baffle plate is already planned - using the old one Dry sump - No too expensive, complicated and you need a tank somewhere - but if this turns into a track machine then I may add an accusump for special occasions

Ross k
Nice project mate looks like your having a simular sump crossmember debate as I had with the jz. could you not notch the crossmember and box it back in to allow a better sizes sump I know a few people have done this when fitting a jz. Good work keep it up if I can give any help give me a message I know it's a different engine but might be able to offer some help with rad fitment etc
Keyser
Evening all, Only got a couple of hours in tonight - rest of the family want to eat "At a reasonable time" I think 11pm is reasonable but apparently I'm wrong So first and most important job tonight - my welding chair keeps sinking all the way down (no weight jokes thank you!) Thats got that covered onto the welding Lets make fun shapes Simples Now I stopped at this point as as @Ross k (thanks for the offer) mentions we are playing the what fits over what works game, How much oil can it hold?? So given the basics - V Coordinates of a vertex. T Unit tangent vector from the vertex along the edge towards the other end. N Unit vector normal to the edge in the plane of the face, and pointing from the edge into the face. B Unit vector normal to the plane of the face, and pointing into the polyhedron. Then the volume of the polyhedron, VOLUME = -1/6 sum( V.T V.N V.B ) Also, the total area of all the faces, AREA = 1/2 sum( V.T V.N ) and the total length of all the edges, LENGTH = - 1/2 sum( V.T ) That I really can't be bothered with I got these - filled em with water - 4 litres I got this - with this much left so that's about 3.75l - I estimate 5l when I can fill it all the way up and that's enough We can add in an oil cooler and I recon I can hit the magic 6l So I carried on - hole Gone More tomorrow But please note I used Lilt Zero - makes all the difference Keyser Maximum Effort Edited October 8, 2018 by Keyser

Are you an engineer of sorts or just have a knack for this stuff? My Background is very, very mixed grew up on a farm where (back in the day) if anything broke you just got on and fixed it with whatever you had to hand. Mostly bailer twine they didn't have duct tape back then Had my first motorbike at the ripe old age of 9 stripped and rebuilt that - again in the days before ECU's, VVT and the like. Apprenticed as a mechanic for 18 months in the days of YTS - I'm sure a few of you remember that!? Laid off when the government stopped subsidising my wages (along with 90% of the other apprentices) Joined the Army Got a B Tech in electronics and became a satellite communications technician (Ooo Err) They also gave me a gun - are they mad???? Broke my leg badly spent a couple of years on crutches so the army gave me a desk job designing and maintaining computer systems until I'd done my time, I now run an IT support company The cars - what can I say I'm a petrol head but above all I love to tinker with them
