Keyser
Hi fellow Zedders Yet another tale of Keyser got in deep again There I was contemplating the best place to put my recently acquired LS2 V8 6l engine, as I'm not sure the original plan of putting it in the MX5 is a good one. While considering other options I end up on eBay looking at 350/370's "spares or repairs" I come across a 350z for something like £166.00 3 days into a 5 day auction or something like that, Now the tyres are worth more than that so I put in a bid, long story short I put a maximum bid in that was way to low to possibly win the car (the parts are easily worth more) and forgot about it. Yup you are ahead of me of course my bid won Here she is - Not in bad condition - better than the photos made her look. Here is an extract from the eBay advert - ON OFFER I MY NISSAN 350Z I BOUGHT THIS A WEEK AGO AND THIS WEEK THE CAR BROKE DOWN, SUSPECT TIMING CHAIN PROBABLE ENGINE DAMAGE. I WAS DRIVING ALONG ON A DUAL CARRIAGE WAY THE ENGINE LOCKED UP ALL THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON I LOST POWER AND COASTED TO A STOP IT DROPPED ALL ITS OIL AND THEN WAS RECOVERED. EXPECT MAJOR ENGINE WORK NEEDED SOLD AS SPARES OR REPAIRS TILL NEED RECOVERING. So I knew the engine was not good but I had to see what happened I started taking her apart Sunday night, when I pulled the plenum I found this - I know, I know I haven't covered the inlets but I'm really not bothered about anything getting in there as the inside of the plenum looks like this - Any way I'm sure if I wash that out and put it back together it will run fine I will post more pics as I strip the engine down and see what destruction has taken place Keyser

Hang on mate, I'm not sure what I'm doing with her yet! May just put another DE in her and sell her on as a cheap Zed may put the LS in just for fun or I may just strip her for parts. No definite plan has been formulated but I am going to strip the engine down to see if I'm right - the advert "suspect timing chain" I don't see that as "dropped all it's oil" means a hole in the block somewhere - I recon he broke a rod and it's made a hole - I'll be starting the engine strip tonight but I have to also get the Radical engine ready for shipping to the machine shop as we may or may not have blown that up last week as well Unless valves usually look like this that is - Opseee - new head needed but I also have to get that machined as we have oversized studs and CNC turbo head work to do, no rush as the track season is all but over for the year. I do it evenings and weekends - it is what I do with my spare time, I just like tinkering on cars £2200 was my max bid won it for £2150 - Which I will get back if I strip the big parts off and sell them so I won't be out of pocket but I based it on car £2k new engine £1.5K would be £3.5k invested and the car should be worth that at least - anything above would be profit/pay for my time 2 hours ago, The Bounty Bar Kid said: A simple Google of the wording from eBay brings you this item sold on eBay... https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F392130209188 Stalker alert Do you want my Facebook username and twitter account as well? Keyser
So just to keep you bored as you all want the V8 (this IS undecided) I started by taking the engine out - 6 Hours - That was on my own, the Zed Shed record is 3 hours car in to engine out but that was me @buster and @Mrs Keyser I also haven't had much practice lately Edited October 3, 2018 by Keyser
Keyser
But I had to know what had happened to the engine .................. found the hole the oil came out of sump came off next more soon ........
Keyser
This is not looking good .............. so here is the damage - Rods What is left of 2 pistons and the rings removed debris from engine Left cylinder head right cylinder head So the plan is cut the valves down on cylinders 3 and 4, weld them into the head remove the rods and put it back together I will have a V4 350z Or maybe just drop the lot down the scrap yard The good news is when the top end was rebuilt 6000 miles ago they put new cam covers on and they are still good - something I can sell YAYY!!! Next stage soon(ish) Keyser

Jay84
Forgive my ignorance, but what caused the failure? Was its a lack of oil from the hole, or was the hole caused by the failure?
Keyser
2 hours ago, Jay84 said: Forgive my ignorance, but what caused the failure? Was its a lack of oil from the hole, or was the hole caused by the failure? Well it's guess work really, the engine had a top end rebuild about 7,000 miles ago (I have the receipts) Valves changed, oil gallery done and new timing chain. So my guess is you take a 118,000 mile engine and refresh the top end, this results in better performance BUT the bottom end was not done, It probably could have used it especially as doing the top would most likely increase power, Now drive it like you stole it and that extra power found a weak point, worn piston most likely was the first thing to fail - as soon as that broke and started bouncing round the engine the rest just beat itself to death. So the hole in the sump was a result of the engine fail and the reason the oil ran after the engine seized, no sign it was low on oil before that, But I have no service history or anything to say it was well looked after for the first 100K.
