GreenLandy
A friend with a convertible has got issues with the roof. She took it to Nissan who quoted her 10k for a new roof (!). They suspected motor as the brake trick and lubrication did nothing and they can’t supply just the motor. Apparently they had it working for about an hour and then it packed in again. ive suggested h dev, who don’t touch roofs, TGM who have never done one, but would look. shes keen to get someone who has done it a few times before. We are in Basingstoke, but I’m sure she’d travel a reasonable distance for the right person. any suggestions/recommendations?
ZMANALEX
Can't help with a repair specialist but I have fully working motors in stock if required.
GreenLandy
Cheers Alex, may well be needed! How much do you charge for one please?
ZMANALEX
£65.00 each or £100.00 for a pair.
UK_350z
I'm afraid you're very very limited for places you can take your Roadster to get it checked out, I know from 1St hand experience. If you can think of a soft top specialist in the UK then I've already called them and its the same thing I hear each time "...sorry, we don't touch the 350z, 370Z no problem..." The nismo centre in London had my car for a week and even they couldn't diagnose the fault correctly, they plucked the figure of £1200 out of the air to change something that wasn't broken and still couldn't guarantee it would make the roof work. Now that I have pinpointed the issue with my roof, finally, none of these so called specialists seem skilled enough to work out how to do the job even though I've shown them what the issue is. There is an abundance of sources for parts, just no one capable of doing the work. My only option now is to minimise the loss I'll make by selling the car as there is very little point in keeping it. I would suggest that your friend think about doing the same.
GreenLandy
How bizarre! Is it particularly complex to repair then, or just diagnose?
UK_350z
I don't think it's any more difficult to work on than any other convertible, the last place I wasted my time visiting (after travelling 1 1/2 hours traveling to) everything from an MX5 to a 911 cab, an SL55 and SL350 Mercedes, a Ferrari 360 and a few others I can't remember. I've spend close to a £800 giving my car to various "specialist" to fix, only to be told they can't but I still had to pay for their time. Maybe it's me, maybe people don't like big fat bearded man trying to make their job a little easier. Maybe I need a petit busty blonde woman to get any worked done. Anyone have one I can borrow? Garages are in the business to make money. As soon as they come across a job that is more bother than it is worth, then they will body swerve it. The 350 roof faults are not the easiest to diagnose correctly and fiddly to fix. It is a specialist repair, however finding one who is prepared to take on the job may be difficult and almost impossible to find if you want an estimate. I am afraid that it is one of those jobs that will take as long as it takes so you are basically giving the garage an open cheque book.
GreenLandy
Slight update, she's had someone look at it, in her words: "So the mechanics have looked at the car and they say it is the ‘main roof motor’ which is failing i.e. when it is trying to first lift the back of roof before the front is pulled down. The two other motors deal with things like the flaps etc and seem to be ok." Im guessing this is the fifth bow motor? If this is the case could you let me know a price for one please Alex? And do you have a part number for it as well, just to put her mind at rest that it is the correct one?
ZMANALEX
Best just to rebuild the 5th bow motor if that is the problem.

kmdavis1
Hi Zmanalex I am learning all the time on this subject. Where is the 5th bow motor located please. As I seam to have the same problem. The motor seams to strain when the roof opening process gets to the 5th bow (section with rear screen?) There does seam to be some additional load coming from somewhere, as you hear the motor stain and then there is a jolt as the roof then continues to fold away. If you feel this is the brushes of the motor or is it motors? where can I get these from and just to confirm where is/are the motors located in the car please. Thanks Keith
leebottrill
Autotrim in Plymouth will work on the 350z roof. They are really great guys who have years of experience. Worth giving them a call. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=autotrim+plymouth&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#
Androlyn
I would be interested to see if the Autotrim of Ivybridge, people in Plymouth can take a look at my roof, will be contacting them shortly to find out. I really wish the 350z's had a manual operation available as back up, I think the 370z's do for up and down.

Further to this yesterday I have spoken to Autotrim of Ivybridge at length and they do not have the diagnostic equipment for the 350Z, they have for plenty of other cars but not this as it's not been called for and expensive to get which I understand. Offered to take a look for me to see if anything was obvious, may be worth a couple of hours labour. Also a good suggestion was see if I can get a Nissan dealer to do a diagnostic on it then use that to try and sort it. I understand main dealers don't want to look at these roof's and would be expensive anyway. At least I have windows and aircon.......to go with the smooth V6.....
