Declangibbs
Hi my car today has decided it no longer wants to start. When I turn the key all the electrics come on and fans. But when I turn to crank it over nothing happens, I get a squeak and that's it. battery should be all fine, nothing disconnected. Any ideas? I'm thinking possible starter motor failure but i can't even hear the fuel pump prime when I click it on the second turn on the key. thanks guys
Sargara
You'll need to get a multi-meter on the terminals really to see what is getting power and what isnt. What voltage is your battery gauge on the centre console reading when you turn the ignition on (prior to starting the car)?
Declangibbs
My battery is reading 12v when the ignition is on. just makes no noise whatsoever when I turn to crank it over, other than a creak
Declangibbs
If my fuel pump had failed would the car still crank over ?
Declangibbs
Okay so update. I jump started the car and it fires up fine. after it ran for a bit I turned it off and then it wouldn't crank again. 10 minutes later it started up fine. Then wouldn't start again! I'm guessing the battery has had it ?
Ekona
You need to get the battery and alternator tested.
mr v6
Just to add, I had a similar issue last year, not had the problem since sorting out the battery positive terminal connection: https://www.350z-uk.com/topic/113080-faulty-starter-motor/ It may help, it may not. Declangibbs
Ooh okay, will have a look tomorrow. only difference is I can't hear my fuel pump priming when I turn the key. So random
Declangibbs
Nope that didn't clear it up, shame. What sort of battery do I need to order?
Ekona
Have you tested the battery and alternator yet? That's literally the very first thing to try, both Sargara and myself have mentioned this now.
Declangibbs
Okay so I bought a battery tester and turns out battery was fried. Bought a new one from Nissan at £59, surprised how cheap it was! car still refuses to start though, makes the same "click" sound when turns to position 2. no fuel pump priming at all
glrnet
Has the battery fuse blown? Are there ignition lights. Have you checked the voltage of the new battery?
davey_83
Poor battery earth to the bulk head maybe.
Declangibbs
No fuses have gone. Everything works perfectly fine all instruments light up and fans work etc. when I turn key to position two all I get is a squeak. Earth all looks to be okay. How strange. Redsky
Could I be suffering a similar problem maybe? The car starts fine for the most part, everything turns on fuel pump primes but very occasionally it really struggles to crank. It seems like the battery is low but the in car gauge says its fine. Theres no specific leadup to it sometimes its after its sat overnight sometimes its after its been on for an hour or so then off for 10 minutes then back on. Just a little confusing and worrying as if it wont start i could end up stuck.

Declangibbs
Update: car is still refusing to start. When I turn the key the immob light goes off so that can't be the issue. starter doesn't click and the car now doesn't start if being jumped. Just makes no noise at all. Rob332
1 - Check the battery connections, looking for security/ corrosion. Positive and earth. 2 - Check the voltage at the starter motor solenoid when staring the car. Should be 12v. If no voltage present you have a wiring / ignition switch issue. If you are getting 12v to the starter but it's not engaging then likely it is buggered. 3 - Check the clutch pedal switch. 4 - Give up and get a sparky to look at it. I get the feeing it's the battery connections though. All the best dude.
mr v6
Just to add to this, have you had it plugged in to read for any stored or pending codes?
Declangibbs
Going to have another look at it later today. would it be battery connections if I'm still getting all electrics? i have found my original key, gonna try that. if that fails I'm then going to try bypassing the clutch switch. switch seems okay, when I press it in the car still doesn't start though. Is it possible for the switch to just fail?

Where did you find your problem? just tried bypassing the clutch position sensor and didn't fix the issue. Ordered a new one anyways. PPod
Had a read at your posts and it sound exactly like what I had and I just had to get a new battery that worked. I actually ended up with the £95 one from halfords after 2 others wouldn't work.
