The Bounty Bar Kid
Hi peeps, So we need a new TV. Problem is is that I'm torn between two models and wanted some advice over what people think would be best. One is the Samsung Mu8000 series 65", the other the Samsung Q7F but only 55" The Q7F is much better quality but it's that little bit smaller. The MU8000 is the top of their mid range tvs but it's just not as good as the new qled range. Ekona
Big is best. But seriously, ten inches is a massive difference in tellybocks size, so it depends on your usage. Is this going in the living room or a bedroom? Living room I'd go bigger, bedroom I'd go smaller.
The Bounty Bar Kid
It's for the living room.
Flashback
Personally I'd go for the bigger TV. The 8000 series are pretty good, but always worth an opinion on a specialist forum. Some of these guys can be a bit anal, but if you ask a question and are really specific about what you want to get out of it, other AV set up you have our plan to run they should give you pretty sound advice. marzman
I went from a Samsung 55" to a Samsung 65" a few years ago. Bigger is definitely better.
Stutopia
How big is the room, or, more importantly what's your normal viewing distance?
The Bounty Bar Kid
Viewing distance would be 5m. Room is 5x5 but in an L shape. Main section is 5m x 3m
gangzoom
If your spending that much than OLED should be at the top of the list. I recently picked up a 6 series LG OLED for nearly half it's RRP last year. 4K, HRD etc etc, but the main selling point is the blacks!! When displaying a black/dark scene the screen looks though it's totally off, the level of contrast in better than anything else I've seen including the legendary Kuro Plasma 600A which I was lucky enough to own at one point - Motion handling still isn't as smooth as a Kuro but than again since people have stopped selling Plasma I doubt the Kuro will ever be bettered on that front. Go into a shop and ask them to demonstrate a dark/black scene on a OLED panel next to any of the LCD back light TVs (Like QLED) and the difference is night/day. Opening credits to house of cards shows up the difference really well. Other advantage of OLED is the colours/saturations are just as good off angle as been viewed directly in front, and if you have large room with people viewing from the side its a major advantage. https://www.whathifi.com/advice/what-oled-tv-tech-benefits-best-oled-tvs Edited July 24, 2017 by gangzoom
Stutopia
Personally, at 5 metres viewing distance I'd go bigger. BUT, I'd probably buy the better telly and sit closer! http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Article/How-Far-Should-I-Sit.php
coldel
We just moved up to a 32 inch TV from a 28 inch TV this year for our living room On a more serious note, we bough a Samsung, and I found the internet connection on it to be very hit and miss. Disconnects randomly and has to be reset periodically which is annoying typing in passwords via a remote. I googled it and apparently the software on our Samsung has hundreds of reports of this problem which Samsung will not rectify. Sure yours is running something else given the price, but worth doing a quick check on with a google search first.
The Bounty Bar Kid
Cheers peeps. I really wanted this one... https://m.johnlewis.com/samsung-qe65q9f-qled-hdr-2000-4k-ultra-hd-smart-tv-65-inch-with-tvplus-freesat-hd-360-design-black-ultra-hd-premium-certified/p/3177185 But the wife said no
Tricky-Ricky
If you can afford to go OLED then go for it, Samsung do not make OLED, and the QLED is not the same, just an improved version of quantum dot, however i would always go for biggest you can afford, and at those viewing distances you will not really get the benefit of UHD even with a 65" screen, you really need to be closer. I sit around 12 feet from my Samsung 65" set, however i wouldn't go Samsung again after going through four sets and having problems with all, my,next set will be LG OLED
Ekona
And on the flip side, I've only ever had Samsung TVs and wouldn't dream of swapping brands. I wouldn't disagree that the internet stuff is guff but it is with every brand, I'd only ever use a separate box for Netflix, Plex et al. The Bounty Bar Kid
OLED is too much. Unfortunately the budget I have been given won't allow more than that. Would love a 75" as I can't move the sofa any closer, it would create an awful weird gap behind it. However I know I wouldn't be able to push for that. Ekona
Budget been given?! Cough up the extra yourself then

Ekona
Except you've already said that this is what you've been given, not what you actually want to spend. Get what you want, compromise elsewhere. Let her have a nicer ironing board or something.
wizard
Hey you - long time. Just dont buy a bloody sony whatever you do. The UI is complete garbage and so so sooo laggy. I got 65" - if i could do again, would opt for a Samsung defo. Good luck.
RichKitch
Whichever you choose, let me give you a quote. I work at a major TV/Home cinema shop and can more than likely do you a better deal than the likes of John Lewis or Currys. Plus my place gives a 6 year warranty. sipar69
OLED and Samsung's top end panels each have pros and cons. Whatever you go for, if you want a reasonably future proof TV I'd go for an HDR capable panel. There isn't much HDR content available at the moment - some streaming services offer it and you can get some HDR blu rays. It's gob smackingly good though - much more noticeable than the difference between HD and non HDR 4k. I'm not sure how she's gonna take it when I say I wanna get the £3500 bose surround sound system. Pick your battles is what I'm thinking. So really you're looking for the set with the crappiest sound output as standard. The picture quality is just a bonus really...
