nowhereboy
Currently 3 months into working away. First experience of doing this and its bassicly turned into a lads holiday. Company is picking up the hotel bill and the booze has been flowing every night! Im assuming plenty of you on here have done this before, the boredom is real, either sit in a hotel room or drink with the lads in the bar. Not sure what my point is here but I there is one somewhere! Going stir crazy. Currently thinking of how to spend the extra money on car parts haha..... Stutopia
I did a couple of months away, drank almost as much as I did at uni, ate out every night, gained at least a stone. It's both brilliant and awful, all at once. That was just in Derby, imagine if it was somewhere exotic... Enjoy!
DoogyRev
Travelling away gets real tiresome, I have done it a lot. I used to love flying, and now its a bit of a chore. When I am away I try to make sure I get to see more of wherever I am, ok Tokyo may be different to Redcar in terms of what to do . . . but my advice would be start going out and about when you are not working rather then drinking at the bar or sitting in your room. or invite some friends along for the weekend. Where about are you?

Wasso
I did the same for a whole year, which meant having a great time away, although the penalisation was long working hours, drinking and eating late, not seeing the other half. I'd be away during the week and return at weekends. I wouldn't do it again that's for sure.

Nothing against Derby, there was some decent restaurants and a pub and a casino, all on the same street. But let's face it, it's not working away in San Francisco or Amsterdam or Stockholm
-G-
I used to live, work & travel across Europe & Africa visiting oil & gas terminals / refineries when I was first teching & can sympathize completely. I watched lads blow a whole months wages down the bookies / casio due to boredom or worse, end up pickling their liver 7 nights a week in the local sports bar. It's always worse in places like the Shetlands & Orkney for boredom and drinking - but then again, places like Hamburg & Rotterdam have thier pitfalls, too. I ended up enrolling for a university degree a few years but still get similarly bored offshore when I don't have any university coursework & after I graduate next year I plan on remedying any future spells of boredom with buying a games console for leaving offshore. Dunno if the sound of buying an Xbox for spells of boredom appeals!
Wasso
I used to take my playstation down to the hotel - connected onto their wifi and boom! Happiness resumed!
nowhereboy
Hotel WiFi is rubbish and I can't get the x box to connect online unfortunately. I'm staying at the village hotel in Birmingham. No offence to anyone else who happens to live here but my god, the city is a complete dump. It's 70% Industrial, 10% train station and 20% kebab shops Currently on the train back to Newcastle and away for the weekend, looking forward to seeing the Tyne bridge on arrival, home sweet Home! Ukeraa
Be careful in hotels using their wi-fi! I stayed at a Premier Inn when I was working for McLaren in Woking, and I used their wifi to purchase something online (can't even remember what), the very next day there were 400+ transactions from my account! I asked to move hotel after that experience. But yes, I know the feeling very well when you can expense food and booze. It's fun to work your way around an area, trying all of the restaurants . Enjoy!
