Dragonfire
Hi guys Just insured my Z at a massive cost of £700. Apparently I need more driving experience. So as a 52 year old who's licence is his livelihood I am considered a huge risk . Lets look at the facts. Z is 2006 UK car standard apart from wheel spacers. Z is kept in an alarmed locked garage over night with cctv and flood lit drive I have 35 years driving experience I have no claims or convictions I also have full Motorbike licence I also have HGV Licence. I drive various large cranes for thousands of miles a year around the country. Past cars include Supra twin turbo ,2.8 capris,st200 and 24 to name but a few. These cars were driven in all weathers with no problems. Bikes include ,R1 ,GSXR1100, FZR1000,to name a few. capable of 170mph and only two wheels! Again no accidents. So can someone tell me how much more experience I actually need to drive the Z???? Maybe if NASA allowed me to take the Space Shuttle out for a blast that might lower the premium. Dragonfire
I tried all over mate .All the underwriters are banging on about experience as this is my first Z
Wayne370Z
I was 52 when I got mine and driving experience was never a question that came up. I went from an RCZ to the Zed and it wasn`t a great lot more and hadn`t had anything much power wise before the RCZ. I always find the best price on GoCompare and don`t remember there being any questions on there about experience. ATTAK Z
Ask them if they know what a Capri is ... then tell them they're not experienced enough to insure you ...then talk down to them to the point of total humiliation ... stupid idiots ... Have you tried Aviva ?
Dragonfire
I did the comparison sites and Performance direct quoted £350 . I thought I was sorted. When I told them I had the Z for only 2 months the underwriters stopped quoting.Same thing at Esure and Aviva. All wanted experience with the car. Wasso
Just tell them you have part share in a 3000 horse drag car I've heard of this before but not somebody with that much experience. Insurance is a joke sometimes.
Randy_Baton
I was driving a fiat 500 diesel ecoflex before my Z. The specialist insurers on here wouldn't touch me for a year, but the big ones had no issue. Think i went with admiral first time round. modo
Any excuse to rip us off, makes me sick how these companies have a monopoly. Shop around but they all try it on these days. I had to send them all my details and the link to DVLA do that they could view my licence. I only past my test in 1976, motor bike and car. Never had points either. I dont think they can think outside the box. Just tick box's.
Strudul
FYI, keeping your car in a locked garage etc will usually return a higher insurance premium than if you keep it on a driveway or roadside.
Irn Bru
Don't understand Aviva, I'm with them on the moddified policy...... £350.00 and my Zed is modded to death and I'm the same age as you. Have you tried Grove & Dean, they're my brokers. I run 5 vehicles, three business and two personal and they never been beaten on price in 10 years Ive been with them. Jetpilot
Any excuse to load a premium. Its getting to be a bit of a farce these days imho.
Jay Kay
I'm 40 and have driven many cars in the past, BMW 330, highly modified RS2000, Megane R26, numerous GTI's etc and I got the same-the Zed is very powerful and unless I had experience in a similar powered car I wouldn't get a quote. its a joke, The zed is hardly a rocketship.
jumping350
I got this when I had the subaru they said I havent driven a 4WD car before so first year will be higher? it did go down a lot after that Yours is bit odd when mine happened it was about drive train they said I had exerience with FWD/RWD but not 4WD but you have plenty of experience with RWD so id maybe try and argue with them from that angle? Ekona
Heh, my other half had that when she bought her current Impreza. When pointed out that she'd previously been driving the exact same Impreza 3 years ago until she sold it they were happy enough to insure her
Wozzy
I found the exact same issue today, current insurer said no chance as I needed experience with "Performance rear wheel drive cars" which I can't get without owning one! Fortunately Adrian flux came in strong and told me it wasn't a problem and I'd been insured with them before, £670 fully comp £250 excess which beat hastings who offered £690. I'm 27 w/ 6 years NCB no points, might be worth giving them a ring they where really helpful. I believe she said the underwriter was Aegas but I'm not 100%. Dragonfire
Thanks for all the replies guys. I am with Adrian Flux and did argue the fact my experience with rear wheel drive cars was probably more than anyone sat in their office but to no avail. In my opinion its just an excuse to get more money out of me.20 years NCB doesnt count for anything it seems. I accrued the NCB with the capris and the supra!!! I find it an absolute insult that they question my proven driving experience and the fact that if I lost my licence I would lose my livelihood too should make me a very safe guy to insure . At the end of the day I could go out in a 1 litre fiesta and notch up a hundred traffic offences, kill a few pedestrians, and cause thousands of pounds of damage in a matter of minutes if I was a complete idiot. Its the same with the bikes. They only go faster if you open the throttle ,and forgive me if I'm wrong but they are rear wheel drive too!! GMballistic
I feel your pain Dragonfire and I'm sure most on the forum would agree with you that it's a pretty messed up situation. I was surprised when I went from my 2003 Nissan 350Z that was heavily modified with a supercharger producing 436Bhp which I paid a reasonable premium for, that the insurer wanted more when I decided to downgrade to a 2008 Honda Civic Type R (198Bhp) whilst I was saving for a house, ...makes no flippin' sense what so ever. Needless to say I changed insurers to another company who charged me less. I just find that I'm forced to change every year now which is a ball ache but not as bad as paying OTT premiums.
TT350
Adrian Flux yet again. What's happened to them?! Car insurance has gone absolutely mental. And....they can get away with it. The government needs to step in seeing as it's law that we have car insurance. Recently I read that they were going to put a cap of £1000 for new/young drivers. If that's going to be the case, what would be the point in NCB then as some of us are paying close to or over 1000 with 10+ years NCB and lots of experience trying to insure a mundane daily driver. I insured mine with Esure on the day of purchase. 28yrs old and a fairly colourful driving history. Never any questions about experience etc and they didnt care that I was on the train heading to collect the car when I phoned them to insure it. Ive heard a few people say this about insuring the Zeds but Ive never come across 'experience' being a specific question/factor before with any car. Recently I read that they were going to put a cap of £1000 for new/young drivers. My first car was a 1.8i Vectra and cost me £3800 per year to insure at 17! Wish they had capped it back then lol Edited May 13, 2017 by Erni902
Strudul
Ive heard a few people say this about insuring the Zeds but Ive never come across 'experience' being a specific question/factor before with any car. I think it's only really asked by the specialists. Comparison sites and big insurers don't care, but a lot of the ones who advertise on the forums will ask and have requirements on age and experience.

modo
Just had a renewal on the wifes little Aygo 2 years old, read the small print, clause 2, will not cover for being stolen unless a Tracker was fitted and on an active contract. Just dropped this in? Devious or what. £50 more this year, and that clause wasnt in last year.
Jay Kay
The Government wont step in as insurance is taxed. If premiums reduce, so too does the gov's income
coldel
As above the specialists usually ask this question to suppress your premium i.e. you have this experience therefore less risk of the lack of it causing an accident. I was asked by AF also (who were excellent by the way great price and speed of sorting stuff out, all done online no paper to fill in etc) but they specifically asked for VERY RECENT experience of driving performance cars which I could give (R33 VX220 350z all in the last 6 years) - if its not recent though it might count against you?
