what part of the exhaust makes the rasp?

Hi peeps, going to sound a bit dim here (nothing new I hear you cry) but i cant seem to work out what part of the exhaust gives that raspy sound. I have a Borla on currently and it is a lovely deep throaty sound at high revs but am looking for a generally more raspier sound. I have heard that some people say the Y pipe makes a lot of difference to rasp while others say that a HFC will change it. ive watched loads of youtube varients but cant seem to pinpoint what part i need to change? is there anyone out there that can help or does anyone know of an exhaust specialist i can consult with?

Cheers

I firstly put the cobra cat back exhaust on, was a lovely deep burble ticking over and deep roar moving up the revs, then recently added the cobra HFCs which now introduce a lot of rasp above 4000rpm so i get the best of both. I love it

It doesn't match as such but is a direct replacement if that makes sense. I think the diameter of the st/steel is bigger to allow for a few extra horses and the back box is smaller then you have an option of resonated or not which will add in a mid box. Mines resonated and is still very loud. The y pipe is optional as are de-cats or HFCs.

They still connect to existing brackets and mountings though so no fabricating or fudging is required.

Speak to Mitz at cougarstore if you need any info. He fitted mine and has fitted loads for members on here.

Thanks people, well I took the Z to a custom exhaust centre to have the mid silencers taken out........

Marvelous result, I now have a really nice rasp as well as keeping the deep roar of the borla. Also as a nice bonus, I have a lovely burble and crackling going on Too! Sweeeeet

Thanks Veilside for that pearl of wisdom

Cheers everyone for their help and input.

1) Burble

2)Crackle

3)Roar

4)Rasp

I see these as:

1. Burble is that lovely V6 'wobbly' noise in my opinion, best heard in the lower rpm range.

2. Crackle would be a form of bang on overun, though I would say crackles, pops and bangs all sound different and easier to show irl.

3. Roar is when full throttle, the car comes to life and is shouting.

4. Rasp is, debatably, that horrid lack of tone and 'wasp nest' sort of noise. Eg. A loud civic is often raspy af. 350z's suffer from it when you dont have many resonators/mufflers etc. A straight pipe would be a lot more raspy than say an ark grip

Thats my interpretation of them anyway!

Well I have all of the above now, and in just the right amounts of each! I was never wanting my Z to sound like a civic with its guts being ripped out so you are ok there!
