GizmoGold
I've now saved more than enough for my new car and once I have the Z off my drive I'll be able to get a new car. I'm looking at MX-5s and I really like the flip-up headlights...has anyone owned one before and have any tips on what to look out for? I've been checking the MOT history of them all and writing off any which have large amounts of rush on the sills/arches. Thanks Chris
Jay84
Like you say the sills are the biggest issue with corrosion. Other than that I've heard they're pretty solid cars. Like all old cars some bits will be perished or seized.
GMballistic
Hello Chris, never owned one myself but I know a few have on here. NEroadster
The rear of the sills and the rear wheel arches rust! Other than that they are bullet proof! Still plenty of good ones around. I wouldn't touch one that had a wheel arch repair. The filler can crack and the rust will probably come back at some point. Still miss my old Mk1 MX5!!
Stutopia
You might get lucky and find a JDM Eunos that's been sealed up and rust free. I think they come with some other advantage too, LSD or different suspension set up, too.
Nutter
I've owned two mk1's A fairly rusty 97 mk1 1.6. Rear cills and wheel arches were really bad. Ended up chopping the cill and flat plating and tubbing the rear arches to remove the rust. Then running over fenders and side skirts. Looked good as new. Immaculate 98 mk1 1.8. This was a billy bargain with no mot and a torn hood for 250. Hood was 120 new and i fitted myself. It flew through its mot and had no rust at all on it and it was a uk car. Main thing is rear cills rust, wheel arch inside lip and front lower a piller. I've seen a few rusty ones on the A pillar and I wouldn't like to be in one of them if it rolled over.
