Mikevv
Hi guys, my insurance will be up for renewal in about 2 months, so I've started shopping around hahaha Many have quoted me £300 over what I already paid last year, despite having an extra years NCB now ( for a total of 3 ) Can any of you provide me with a quote please? I'm 22 - had the license for around 5 years ( got a new one cause of change of address and now can't tell exactly how long I've had it but yeah ) When this policy expires I'll have 3 years NCB - No claims or convictions, just didn't have a car for the first year, then went as a named driver for the 2nd despite being told I'd get a years NCB, but hey. Thanks guys, let me know what you got
Ekona
Ring them up, it'll be quicker. They may well not be able to cover you though, given your age and the fact your car is modified.

coldel
As Dan said ring them up - some specialists though wont be able to insure under 25, but worth trying anyway. Have a go on the price comparison sites to give yourself some benchmarks and make sure to put all your mods in (anything not standard is mod, even if it is wing mirror covers or the like you have to declare this) Prices of insurance are going up anyway https://www.confused.com/on-the-road/cost-of-motoring/what-the-price-index-means-for-you so it likely that you might be caught up in that. Strudul
Yup, definitely should declare those mods: -Exterior decorative changes -Interior decorative changes -Brakes -Alloys
Strudul
Have you checked Confused (or other comparison site) - usually the best place to start. Most of the insurers on the forum require you to be >25, but having a license for 5 years might be enough.
Mikevv
Wow. so declared most of the mods I could on the crappy form from GoCompare... Insurance rose another £800. Yeah WTF is an understatement. All I've done is paint stuff for the love of god. "Up-rated brakes" should bring it down!? I did get a laugh out of it though... "Performance Badging".... so an M3 badge on a 318i ( don't laugh, there is literally a BMW at the bottom of my road with that ) Edited January 25, 2017 by Mikevv
Strudul
Only "mod" that seems to lower premiums is a dash cam. Their argument for up-rated brakes increasing the price is that it allows the driver to go faster because they can stop faster. Also increases the chance of someone going into the back of you. coldel
Its not the value of the mod, its the likelihood that doing this will incur a theft or the like. But clearly you need to call the companies concerned to ensure what their web form has captured is what you intended to communicate to them about your car. When I put a gloss black wrap on the roof of my Celica first discussion with insurance companies was to take my insurance up £100 which was a 25% increase for example which I managed to negotiate down. I know its a pain and takes time, but phone calls will in general get you a lot further than entering stuff into web forms for a good price on modified cars. Don't forget to call your current insurer now to tell them about the mods, as right now if you have an accident you're not covered.

Funny enough my insurer wouldn't reduce the premium for the dash cam, just that it would play a role in determining blame if it captured an accident. Even funnier, when I asked about declaring a dash cam on my existing policy, they wanted to increase my premium and charge me an admin fee. Hence I cancelled my policy and got a new quote with them.
