Fred020
No doubt asked many times but new cars come out all the time. I'm thinking Mustang but slightly put off by stupid audio engine sounds, 22 MPG and "burnout mode" cobblers. Golf R - doubtless fantastic until the novelty wears off and you are left with a small hot hatch. Focus RS - admire this motor for being so out-and-out nuts but same problem as Golf. Another 370Z - tempted, might try auto box this time. TT/BMW - too common, all that "lifestyle" nonsense just isn't me. GT86 - RX8 did it better I see Mazda is putting a tin roof on the MX5. Looks lovely but not competing with the above. Nissan GTR - used to be a bargain, not any more. Electric sports car ?

Gudzy
I'm surprised the Porsche Cayman isn't in your list to consider. Lotus Evora would be nice too, really it depends on your budget and what you are looking for though.
Strudul
Are we talking new or used, and if so, how old? Want to give us some requirements too (budget, spec, performance etc) ? Your list is pretty diverse. Personally I'm after a Jag XKR, but the Cayman would be nice. Edited January 14, 2017 by Strudul

Ekona
Assuming £35K budget: Cayman 911 Exige (could run it for a year and lose zero money) Evora definitely, but early cars had iffy build quality. Suspension amazing though! Vantage V8 M3 E92 Maser GT C63 TVR (pick your flavour) My pick? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-carrera-997/porsche-911-carrera-2/5942740 Don't be put off by the non-S, it's quicker than the 997.1 S and with a bulletproof engine.Manual 'box too, absolute pick of the range for me.

Then with the AM and Maserati, you're paying supercar prices... Edited January 14, 2017 by Strudul

Ekona
Porsches cost no more than the 350 to run, neither would the Lotus. BMW is there or thereabouts (some prices are silly cheap, some monstrous), TVR specialists aren't cheap. Pick an Aston that's had all the niggles sorted and you'll be fine, Maser you'd need to be brave I admit. Merc I don't know about, tbh. What people really need to understand is that the 350 is very expensive to run and maintain, which makes the leap to more premium metal much more bearable than you'd think. Ekona
Sorry but that porker is hideous it looks horrible in that colour What, black?! It's Basalt Black, same as my old one was. Lovely deep colour, loads of metallic fleck. I thought you'd approve, given your last car.
Strudul
Merc is probably one of the scariest, esp if it's the 2000-2007 era. Isn't it something like £20k for an AM tranny? Bit of a risk with a £35k budget. I thought the 350 was supposed to be quite cheap to maintain, being Jap etc. Some parts are a bit extortionate compared to say a Toyota, but still way less than German stuff. Ekona
Nope, it cost me the same to run a 350 as it did run a 911. You wouldn't pay £20K for an AM gearbox though, you'd get a specialist to repair just like you would with a 350.
KyleR
V8 M3, low miles, 5 years old, plenty of cash left over for a few tasteful, subtle mods incl. a nice exhaust and 19" wheels

Ekona
Why do think I bought a poverty spec one with no options? I jest, I bought it because it had a manual gearbox, options didn't remotely interest me, Electrically they're sound, you might get the odd issue with the nav or the heater but they're easily sorted for a couple of hundred. V8s can suffer from dry valve stem seals which leads to massive oil consumption and cat failure if not dealt with, but a couple of grand sees you fixed up for 100k miles. £2K might seem pricey, but that's the going rate for a new DE lump including fitting, so you can see why I say that it's no more expensive to run. BMW do a 'value pack' for brakes and stuff too, which is their way of keeping older cars within their dealers. Better fuel economy than the 350 as well! Jetpilot
Seems like you have considered quite a few options and talked yourself out of all of them, lol but I appreciate where your coming from as nothing leaps out at me either, except the gtr but also agree reference the price. Again not for me but: RS4/6 SL55 Amg M5/
shaunRS
A few mods on the golf r and focus RS and you have a car that can do the 1/4 in under 12 seconds. Plus if you did buy either and want to sell you get your money back as they actually hold their value unlike something like the gt86.
un1eash
I thought the GT86 had pretty good residuals, the used market will soon be flooded with Golf R when all those cheap lease deals end.
