davey_83
What's the idea behind the removeable foam block at the bottom of the OE air box? David Edited October 17, 2016 by davey_83
GMballistic
Was that inside it? Pretty sure (99.9%) that my original airbox never had that inside of it although it has been a long time since I remember looking inside it. Maybe some current owners can check theirs for you. Failing that zmanalex would probably know.
GappySmeg
I recently removed my airbox to fit flyboys velocity stack... deffo did not have a lump of black sponge/foam in it.

Zeezeebaba
I have two, one on the car and one in the garage. Just checked and neither have any foam in them.

GMballistic
Mines not got it either, some power mod the rest of us don't know about! Yep just Googled it and all the Americans are doing it, ...good for 20Bhp apparently. ;)
davey_83
I have both types of DE air box and both have the foam inside, how odd.
GMballistic
I have both types of DE air box and both have the foam inside, how odd. That's very odd. I can't see it doing anything worth while so I'd just bin it if it was me but then why was it there in the first place?! Absorbing noise maybe? Edit: Just did a search to see what I could unearth... Link to some more threads on it: http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/63177-airbox-foam-insert/ http://my350z.com/forum/intake-exhaust/181372-foam-packing-inside-stock-airbox.html https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=350z%20airbox%20with%20foam%20in%20it
Exec
Mine had it, mine had small pieces coming away with age so I removed it to prevent them getting sucked in. I didn't know until now it came with the airbox. Exact same. I still have it in the garage.

davey_83
Absolute legend, cheers man. Il leave it there as Nissan motor company is more clever-ra than me haha. at a glance, helps direct incoming air straight to the filter at least. -blade-
The standard box i have but don't use also has this foam. I assumed it was either a water drainer trap? though can't see it being very effective. The question is do you gain 30hp by fitting the foam? or by removing it ?

350_Jer
I noticed I had the foam in my airbox when I changed my air filter. I just took a guess that it could be to maybe quieten down the induction noise a bit?
Willsy1980
I'd second the catching water drops before the filter, probably useless. On the subject, is it worth spending the money on a K&N panel ? Edited October 17, 2016 by Willsy1980
glrnet
Just a thought, are there any holes drilled in the bottom of the air box? I seem to remember a few years back there was talk of drilling holes in the bottom of the standard air box to increase induction noise!! If that's the case maybe someone shoved the foam in to quieten things down? Like Mopedmark, there's none in mine and none in the 2 I have in the garage. GappySmeg
I've just had a closer look... mine DOES have the foam insert in! To clarify whereabouts it is, with airbox in-situ and the air filter removed, peer down to the bottom... the foam is NOT on the bottom, but squeezed into a recess at the bottom of the airbox (the recess extends into the rearwards wall of the airbox). Quite hard to spot, actually. Cannot conceive of what it's use might be
