dannyscott5
I have a 2004 nissan 350z gt, with 100k miles. So 2 nights ago i was drifting several times enjoying myself anyways how it happened. I had far too many revs on and dropped the clutch and as it started gripping up i heard a bang and lost drive. I have blown a diff before because it was a welded one, but ive fit a low mileage standard diff and all has been well since, till now. So i have replaced the propshaft with another standard CF prop, second hand but looks fine -- went in the splines okay, bolted up okay, anyways i start the car up and the wheels go round fine, i put it into first and let the clutch out the wheels speed up and seems fine - soon as i touch the throttle the traction kicks in and doesnt let me apply power. if i put it in to second and let the clutch out the traction light is already flashing and if i attempt to put throttle on then i hear a knocking noise sounds like towards front of car (gearbox) ? :/ All driveshafts seem okay, now here i have a couple of shocks... Engine turned off - leave in any gear and i can still manually turn the rear wheels around .. surely they should lock out?? If i leave in neutral with car turned off i can maually turn one wheel and the opposite wheel turns the same way.. If i leave in gear with car turned off and i manually turn the wheel which surely shouldnt move... the opposite wheel rotates the oppposite direction... Help will it be Diff issues or Gearbox issues?? :'( :'( Thanks in advance currently not sure what to do now as on axle stands on my drive :(
Ekona
Sounds like the gearbox is shot. Knocking noises from that area, and the fact the 'box doesn't lock up in gear, not good. Replace that first.
Ekona
Also, welcome and good effort in snapping a propshaft, never seen that before on here!
evilscorp
That's a first on this forum! If you managed to snap the propshaft you will have damaged the gearbox also. Did you check the splines were ok when you took the old one out?

dannyscott5
Yes the splines on the old one are perfect still. Pretty rare to manage i know, was hoping be just an easy swap and back on the road but thinking ive done some major damage now and gonna have to leave the car off road for some time

dannyscott5
There is only one way round the propshaft will insert into the gearbox isnt there??? As the wider splines (locators) seemed to be within 180degree...
ZMANALEX
In your first post are all your experiences with the car off the ground ? If so what happens when you try to drive it on the road ?

If so what happens when you try to drive it on the road ? Its still on axel stands, if it aint going to drive properly up in the air whats the point dropping it and trying to reverse up my drive lol!! Scared of doing damage... its dark now i only fitted the prop earlier this evening.. i MAY try reverse tomorrow after work just to see what happens.... dannyscott5
Zmanalex.... when you had your 3 propshafts break..... did they every damage anything else????
ZMANALEX
I am not quite following what you say in your original post. I would definitely drop the car and try driving it to establish if you really do have a problem. Nothing else was damaged when we had the prop issues. What dif are you running ?

I bet if I said no one has ever done a 100mph burning 360 flip in a Z and landed it .......

So I assume you are running it on axle stands with your foot on the footbrake also ? If so the car may cut the throttle, the 370z if does this if the front wheels arent moving with the brakes applied , so you cant do a burnout As said you need to roadtest it
The Chubby Ninja
The traction will cut in if you are driving it on axel stands. Check the sensors on the drive shafts and that the plugs have been connected properly on the diff. It sounds to me like you've blown the diff. Can you turn the prop when it's in gear? I'd say take it off the stands and see if itl drive but I think your diff is away. Also you must have worn bushes or the rear subframe is misaligned to have broke a prop surely. I've been drifting with 500hp through mine for 3 years and it's fine Edited October 5, 2016 by The Chubby Ninja
AliveBoy
If you've done enough damage to snap the prop, I'd say you could have also snapped the input shaft on the gearbox, which is why the wheels still spin in gear with the engine off. THAT could be a problem depending on where it's broken. The clutch plate and the flywheel would allow the engine to turn the wheels on tickover (only in the air obviously), but anything more it would just slip and spin I'd imagine. AliveBoy
Also, you don't say but I presume you're using a really powerful paddle type clutch? That could have fatigued any number of things in the gearbox if you're clutch kicking it a lot, the prop breaking would then have put a huge shock through the box which could have been the final straw... Not trying to put a downer on it, just possible issues.
dannyscott5
GUYYYYYYYS ----- UPDATE!!! So when i turn the traction control OFF = no problems at all its up in the air and into second gear doing 40mph everything smooth..... I have the traction control button bypassed basically so it turns off 100% not 50% as standard.... im assuming its a snagged wire or sensor thats broke ... so obviously when traction is turned on then i have the problem of it coming on instantly killing my throttle and juddering noises from the gearbox area -- Cant be anything major at least if its driving fine in the air with the traction turned off... going to drive it to work in the morning nice and steady with the traction turned off. Il get it up on a ramp at the weekend maybe plug in the code reader -- as i cant tell if it has thrown engine management light on because ive decatted it and engine management light stays on anyways...

It's not too bad to change if your handy with a spanner bud. Just quite time consuming if you have adjustable arms and poly bushes and stuff to change over. I just sent my old z to the crusher with a straight subframe on it or you could of had it free So are you running a welded diff just now? When I done mine I just unplugged the abs block disabling all traction, abs and stability control and it makes it so much more controllable to drift. Even tho you turn the traction control off the crappy stability management is still on and so is the abs which is a pain. Where are you? evilscorp
EBay subframes for under £100, seen a few in the past.
