davey_83
Cheers Tom, yep gunked up pretty bad on the one side lack of v-tech yO! Noticeably smoother idle now and no hesitation rolling on/off throttle, no doubt causing an adverse effect on general performance too. Yeah saw that episode, fairly common thing from what I gather too for those engines.
davey_83
Annual service time, so made use of a dry morning before the girls got back from dance. It's been 12 months since fitting the Gold Plug, was a wee bit anxious to remove it to see what I'd find as you never quite know. P1 oil change service. Catchcan drain. Front ARB SuperPro bushes. Service record - 82060 Phew, minimal swarf found #relieved K&N oil filter off Nissan OE filter on 2yrs worth of oil vapour, better here than the lower intake plenum. Next job, replace the tired factory ARB rubber bushes. Then to fit the stupid engine undertray boooo. davey_83
Couple weeks ago I bought a new unused OE clutch slave cylinder and braided line from forum member Dale. Reading up replacements can be a pain to bleed up, so to side step the hassle I booked the car into a garage for repairs. The fitting took 20mins on a 4 poster ramp but he did struggle to then bleed the system. Then after 45mins he got the pedal back in a fashion enough to get gears and drive, but the last inch would kick up after each use. Mechanic then said that's the best I can do for now and it'll get better on the way home. Thought great I've heard that before, hell I've said that myself in the past lol that same evening went out to get fuel, started it up and no gears!!! Great. Had our brother round that same evening to help bleed the system ourselves. After an hour trying to do the job on axle stands the pedal was no good. The line down to the slave cylinder was good, but I couldn't seem to extract the air from the cylinder itself. Called it a night and then didn't use the car for a week. Planned road trip for the Easter bank holiday meant I couldn't take the 350z, so made use of the brother in law's RX8 to Aberystwyth - surprisingly did 340 miles to a tank!!! Came back after a fab time and began to search around for tips on how to bleed the system. Then had the idea that if I'm struggling mainly with the slave itself, why not prime the cylinder prior to fitting? So tried this, offered it up and it worked first time. Great pedal straight away, the line is good and now the cylinder too. It's been 4 days now and still working good. Parts used: Hosetechnik braided clutch line. Genuine Nissan slave cylinder Motul RBF600 brake fluid. Primed!!! Edited April 11, 2018 by davey_83
cob1980
Hi mate, Nick was telling me about your toasted clutch - thought he meant the clutch itself! I've booked mine in to have the exact same done at RPM Garage Birmingham (not used them before) as I didn't want to risk driving on the old slave to JapFest. Now I'm worried the new one is going to pack up on the way too !! What do you recommend is done then? Priming the slave first? Cheers... Iain. davey_83
Hey pal, where did you get the new slave from? I'd recommend they bleed the system as normal, if there's any struggle remove and prime the cylinder. I looked high and low for bleeding tips, nothing came up. Definitely get a braided line too if not already planning too. The clutch pedal feel was my biggest gripe with my car, irregular and after a long drive or stop/start traffic it would get worst. Now it's sooooo nice and smooth. Really has improved the drive of the car. I get tyres and wheel alignment by tyres r us on the same road!!! Owner Alan is a sound chap tbf too. cob1980
Thanks David. I got a StopTech cylinder from Torqen, and yes also bought a braided hose. The guys at RPM told me not to bother with the Motul fluid, they have said 350z themselves and said they'd never had an issue with regular fluid. We'll see on that. I'm also hoping it changes the pedal feel too, it gets 'sticky' quite easily. I absolutely hate driving in atop start traffic. Also I never seem to be able to pull off smooth...but maybe that's my driving ha ha. That's cool, Alan's the owner of which, the tyre place or RPM? davey_83
Same, pulling away would be sheer chance whether it would be smooth or total amature lol thus far it's consistent and smooth take up of drive yay. Yeah posh fluid isn't essential, but as you only doing it once sticking in some high temperature rated stuff is a good idea as the line runs fairly close to the cat. Of the tyre place under the motorway pretty much. I've got some spare thermal heat wrap you can have if you fancy, came as 1m length and only needed 25cm lol Edited April 11, 2018 by davey_83
cob1980
Ha! That gives me hope! Thought it was just cos I didn't drive it frequent enough and not used to it. That's kind of you, yes please mate
Tom_K
Another interesting update; I've recently fitted a magnetic sump plug and will probably be the same when I next service it. Loved the microfiber to protect the ARB lol That's my kind of thing. Oh, speaking of, here's a tip you might like if you don't know already; buy some ice hockey pucks to use as jacking pads. They're really dense circular rubber and work brilliantly between jacks and whatever part of the body you're touching. Also, interesting to hear of your pain bleeding the slave; I remember being super disappointed at the feel straight after I did mine, but lots of bleeding later and it was fine. davey_83
Cheers pal I had a wee accident on a previous car with a grooved hockey puck. Because the trolley jack head is a fair bit smaller than the underside of the puck, if not mm perfectly central it'll slip under load and went through body ouch. Perfect for like a Costco big head trolley jack, but not my little low clearance amazon offering sadly. Front jacking point I tend to use here and for the rear, the diff with a piece of wood. Yes pal, right drama's getting rid of the air out of the cylinder itself, primed and job done!!
Tom_K
Fair point on the smaller head jacks, I know exactly what you mean. I got a bit creative with a stanley knife and made one fit inside the head/cup of a jack before getting, well, exactly what you said; a big costco jack (seriously, one of my best investments). reeceybeaney
Have seen you're using 5w40 on your oil change. Any particular reason why you chose that over the 5w30? Have heard a lot of people say to opt for the 5w40 due to the higher running temps etc. Looking good!
davey_83
Yeh I'd love one of those posh trolley jack's!! I like what it offers over 5w30, so thought I'd give it a try. Being slightly thicker once up to temperature, it'll provide a tad more protection, quieter running and should carry away the heat better too. Will see how I get along with it over the next few thousand miles.
davey_83
Decided on a mishmash intake setup, hardpipe to airbox and reckon asthestically it works well. Then also re polished the faded headlamps and used up some C4 to protect. Should see out 2018 and then I'll look to clear wrap for a longer term fix.
