Undersealing / undercoating

With my Z (53 plate) getting on a little. Let. My thoughts turn to preservation as well as enjoying it.

What are the thoughts on undersealing / undercoating? Especially in the wheel wells.

What kinds of costs would be appropriate for a garage to do it?

I was charged £200 for clear undersealing my 380RS - even though it won't ever get used in bad weather - wondering if there is any value is in underselling a car that's probably seen the worst of the UK weather - unless of course you've been keeping it out of the snow & salt since new?

Just a thought

I removed all 4 wheels and removed all the dirt, I didn't remove the front wheel arch liners and the rear arches are pretty exposed with no liner as such.

I then coated with Hydrate 80 from Bilt Hamber before applying a couple of coats of Smoothrite black, using a combination of brush and spray.

I know it's not everyones cup of tea to use Smoothrite but I use it on all my cars and re-coat every 3 years or so, that said although the Z is my daily runner being self employed I don't do a massive mileage because I generally work from home so the car will not be subjected to heavy winter use anyway.

I removed the W brace and cleaned / re-painted using the same Hydrate 80 and smoothrite, I then cleaned and re-painted the underside as far as possible up to the sill edges with any bolts removed ( inc underneath covers ) being treated with copper grease before replacing.

I could have used a local company to clean and waxoyl the underneath but I'm not a massive fan of that stuff being applied underneath to be honest, but I did a wheel arch a day and I suppose including coating all exposed bolts it took me a couple of weeks to complete.

For me doing a bit at a time means the job doesn't become a chore and spending 4 to 5 hours at a time is enough.

Also started to clean under the bonnet and starting to look better.

Smoothrite isnt an underseal you still need to underseal over it

Epoxy paints like POR15 are very good to coat unprotected areas , my Evo had unlaquered body colour underneath in places . I spent 2 weeks one Christmas doing it , took the fuel tank and exhaust off and everything, I used an epoxy paint , then shutz underseal and finally brush on underseal in nooks and carries

When I did my R33 the protection behind the wings was like this ie nothing

I used a rust protector , then smoothrite, then anti chip compound and finally wax

To do it properly is a really big and really messy job , if you want to get a company to do it there are loads of 4x4 specialists that are geared up for it and can do it for a reasonable price
