What does it feel when you pushed the car to the limit?

I exit the roundabout and accelerated hard through a tight bend onto the motorway. For a split second, the steering just feel weird so I quickly ease off the pedal. I suppose I was near the limit? It was so short that I dont recall the feeling. I think the front became light and felt like the car was going to take off?

Was dry and the tyres warmed up. Think i was on second or third gear. Still havent done a wheelspin. I drive too conservatively.

 

So what does wheelspin feels like? Do you just hear the sound?

Wheel spin combined with a steering wheel in oversteer is a closest feeling of heavens. Combine that with a 4th gear and entrance to a highway from a country road with 120 mph oversteer my oooo my. Heavens ðŸ˜

Steering going light is usually under steer, but you can also get weird feelings if the tyre wall collapses (check the outside tyre for scrubbing on the wall and check the pressures all round too), if you hit a bit of oil / water, etc.

 

This next bit of advice is given out a lot here I know, but go on a track day. Visit an airfield one where there's nothing to hit, and play around a bit. All the skill / experience is to be found in the corners, so go in to them at different speeds, use different brake points, different amounts of steering input, accelerate out differently, drive with the TCS off, etc... and see what you can learn about how your car handles. Then, next time you have 'a moment' on the road, you should be better placed to understand what's happening and how to fix it.

 

If you don't get to play around enough on your TD to learn anything - get some track day tuition, either on the day its self or from a specialist at a later date. I'm a fairly capable track day driver, but I still think tuition is invaluable.

Be careful coming off the throttle too sharply. If you're at the limit the weight transfer to the front of the car can cause the car to snap into oversteer.

Lucky you I always hover around 21mpg with mixed driving. Yeah just be careful with the throttle, especially on a greasy road. It's a heavy ol' thing so you don't want it swinging about on a public road. If you want to feel what the weights like, get a large empty space (privates always a good idea lol) and turn your ESP off, drive round in a circle gradually building up the speed. If you've not felt it before its quite surprising how quick it whacks round with the weight of it. Most of all... be safe lol

Ive been driving fairly aggressive over the weekend and I cant believe that it is still doing 27mpg.

 

Your definition of aggressive is obviously different from mine :lol:

 

The previous owner (from here) managed to do something like 17mpg.

 

My 27mpg is country road driving though. A little bit on the motorway but mostly A and B roads.

 

So what mpg do you achieve with your more spirited drive? :)

I average 21 and I don't drive too aggressively!

Accelerating round a roundabout and exiting it and the steering becomes light usually is something you'd experience in a front wheel drive car.

 

I don't know how you were nearly on the edge or felt like you were on the edge exiting a roundabout in 3rd. In the dry.

 

Maybe if you slingshot round it and exit in high 1st or 2nd then totally plant it.

I'm a bit in awe of anybody who can get these things out of shape. I suppose you can provoke anything to misbehave, Top Gear clowns seem eminently able. I, sort of, know, roughly, where the Nurburgring goes, but am in no way even good. 11 minutes (and some) is not going to worry Sabine.

Having said all that, I was pushing on. No tyre squeal, nothing let go and this on not particularly sticky rubber. There are camber and road surface changes by the second, thankfully dry, it just sat there and went when the accelerator was pushed and stopped when the brake pedal was pushed.... even harder!

I thought the Clio Sport was a leach to the road, this thing does it better and even absorbs the bumps that had the Clio airborne. My co-pilot brother who was coaxed into it for a lap said I was taking it easy, nothing like the roller coaster ride of the Renault. I showed him the trip timer, a full minute faster than I ever managed before..... He was impressed.

hah, can't help it. Please bear in mind that I'm just learning how to drive a car properly. Never in the past have I ever driven a car to it's limit. Was always a fairly safe driver. So this is all very new to me!

Most of it is confidence borne of experience, your average drifter can jump into anything RWD and make it work because he knows he can do it. A day spent at driftschool and a guarantee youll be able to do stuff you only dreamed of before, the Zed is very good for it as they are quite predictable and communicative.

 

That said, the Nordschleife is not the place to practice, although once your good enough it makes wet days a lot more fun ;)

hah, can't help it. Please bear in mind that I'm just learning how to drive a car properly. Never in the past have I ever driven a car to it's limit. Was always a fairly safe driver. So this is all very new to me!

 

I really think you should go to a track and be given race lessons as if you've only just learned to drive and you're already in a powerful rear wheEl drive car, being taught how to handle (not just drive) a car close to its limits will really benefit you.

 

You'll have so much more fun afterwards.

 

Ideal fast car for you to have first and build confidence in would be Honda Civic VTI. You'd get to LOVE thrashing that. :)

The cars I've been driving for the past 10 years is Merc E240, Lexus RX300 and GS350. Hopefully you can see why I struggle to drive a Zed. As none of those cars gives me the same feedback and feeling of a Zed. It's like learning how to drive again.

 

I would definitely go on track one day, but I want to get comfortable in the Zed first. The cost of going on track day and doing 1 on 1 tuition is really expensive. I need to save up first!

I hope you won't regret it! I'm based in Cambridge and assume you're in Essex then it shouldn't be too far.

 

Of course it would be nice to go to track day with you and I wouldn't mind paying for you as a second driver!
