Ceejay29
Hi Guys, I will be taxing the car in a couple of weeks; first time since the new 'regime'. I will then be sorning it again come October (I am late re-taxing and typically opt for six months - April to Sep). Is there now an option to specify a duration or will I have to claim 3 months back (if choosing six months) or pay the direct debit surcharge if opting for monthly? Thanks. Ekona
Notifying of SORN automatically triggers the correct refund, either remaining months (if you paid in one go) or cancelling of the DD. If paying in 6mth intervals, you might as well do DD as it's the exact same cost. It's only paying for 12mths up front that gives you the discount IIRC. Ceejay29
Cheers Dan, DD it is then Do you know if the DVLA calculate specific 'usage dates' or is it still generic months? For example if I tax on the June 20th will the charge commence from that date or the beginning of June? Sorry I should probably call the DVLA myself! Ekona
Always on the 1st of the month, so if you tax on the 20th then the tax will actually be backdated from the 1st, although it's obviously not in reality. So you'd pay for 30 days but only be using 10 of them IYSWIM. Same as it always was in that regard.

brillomaster
similarly, make sure when you come to sorn it that it is done comfortably before the end of the month - if you sorn it on the 1st of the month then you'll lose that entire months refund, even though the sorn will be effective immediately.
