How much money have you spent on cars over the years?

Mr Monkeybrain........you are a legend.

£4/month!

You need to change your username to SUPERDUPERBRAIN

More to do with careful purchases, no bank debt and buying at very bottom of depreciation curves. More luck than anything else with residual values. ;)

If I had really been SUPERDUPERBRAIN then I would have bought the Ferrari F355 I was planning on at £37k a two years ago and sold it this year for £60k+. Biggest regret I have made as was so close to buying one.

Mostly by watching prices, there is no set % to follow. Gtr's or R8's are a good example, prices kept coming down then went back up, imho had i been in the market a year or so ago i would have expected them to keep dropping.

Funnily enough when I sold the 350, I was looking at 997 turbos, gtr or 355. I went to look at one for £35k but ended up buying the E type. I never even thought about appreciation I just didn't want something that was losing £500 a month like the Zed at the time. In some respects I was just very very lucky that the E type is now heading towards the £100k mark. I dread to think how much I've lost though over the years on other cars including a Ferrari. It's been fun though for the most part.

My very first set of cars were all losses...often £500 bangers as I made my way through uni and low paid entry level jobs...the cars effectively got driven till they died. I have always bought my cars outright, the 350z, VX220 and R33 all sold for more than I paid (ignoring the money spent on them!) so did alright there. But in terms of mods, easily spent £10k on stuff in the last 4-5 years. I don't go crazy, just work up various clever mods that have the most impact. Having a 4 year old and living in Richmond ensures that I cannot spend much more than that!

Difficult to come up with a realistic figure as brand new cars only cost around a grand when I was changing mine every 8-12 months back in the 70's. I owned 17 cars between 1969 and 1989 but only 4 since then, A very rough estimate allowing for inflation would be 80k though .The only car I ever made money on was a Mini 1000. Bought brand new in September 1974 for £1026, I sold it in June 1975 for £1125. Didn't lose much on The GT6, £200 in 3 years, but inflation was rampant back then. The rest I lost loads on  .

Interesting one really.

I dont believe in getting car loans, so ive paid for all my cars in cash. That way I dont end up paying a fortune in interest.

My first 4 cars were fairly cheap old bangers and I actually sold for the same or more than they cost me which gave me probably about 8 years of relatively free motoring. It wasnt until I started buying more expensive cars that the depreciation costs started adding up.

Last few cars:

Golf GT TDI - "lost" £2300 over 4 years (although did nearly 100k miles in it, so thats only 2.3p a mile)

350Z HR Roadster - lost £6250 in 18 months. (28p a mile)

BMW 123d Coupe - lost £12250 over 4 years (20p a mile)

Current car is a Porsche 997 Turbo, which over the last year has gone up by around £500 a month in value (unfortunately that was before I bought it), so I will see how much I loose on it when I come to eventually selling it.

Your red GT6 Pete ?

If so I used to go fishing in that with my mate Pete. (different Pete than the Pete you all know  )

No, it was a greenish blue colour, K reg. Sadly, I don't think I have a photo of it. Funnily enough though, I did sell it to that Pete, he nagged me for ages about it but I think he moved it on after a few months.

Passed my test at 17 and including my first car which was used to familiarise myself with driving on my grans farm, here's my list in order of purchase.

1980 : 1958 Singer Gazelle £40 ( scrapped ) ( -£40 )

1980 : 1969 Vauxhall Viva HB £295 sold 1982 for £250 ( -£45 )

1982 : 1979 Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 £1795 sold 1985 for £725 ( -£1070 )

1985 : 1972 Hillman Hunter £650 sold 1991 for £300 ( -£350 )

1989 : 1961 Triumph TR4 £750 Still own after full body off resto, owes me £8500, agreed value insurance for £30,000

1991 : 1982 Vauxhall Carlton Estate £750 sold 1992 for £850 ( +£100 )

1992 : 1982 VW Golf GTI MK1 £1350 sold 2010 for £1000 ( -£350 )

1996 : 1979 MG Midget £500 sold 2000 for £1625 after resto costs ( £0 )

1998 : 1966 A35 Van £800 Still own after resto, owes me £4500, agreed value insurance for £10,000

2001 : 2000 Jeep Wrangler £11700 sold 2014 for £3500 ( -£8200 )

2009 : 1979 VW Camper T2 £4000 sold 2013 for £5500 after resto costs ( £0 )

2013 : 1997 TVR Cerbera £15500 sold 2014 for £12750 ( -£2750 )

2013 : 2005 VW Beetle £4300 sold 2015 for £2500 ( -£1800 )

2015 : 2004 Nissan 350Z £7950 Still own used as my daily runner.

I make that +£20,445 thanks to the increase in value of the classic's and valuing the Nissan at what I paid for last year.

Obviously the restoration costs do not include my time ( hundreds of hours ) and the TR4 labour costs from my mate doing the body off restoration were @ £5 per hour in 1989 to 1992 ( 470 hours ).
